I finished Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal last week. It describes the influence the fast food industry has on aspects of our society: food quality, labor laws, eating habits, animal production. It seems to be well researched and it’s easily digested (haha); I read it in less than [...]

This site provides quotes from The Simpsons that have subtle, witty references that a lot of people would miss. An example:
Mr. Burns always answers the phone by saying, "Hoy Hoy!" This is the word that Alexander Graham Bell suggested that we all say when we answer the phone. Bell resented Thomas Edison, who [...]

Well, one site for now: Mr. Bauld’s English. He’s based in Amherst, a 30 minute drive from me. He includes some great links to book related sites and other literature subjects, including an informative page on grammar.
I think I’m going to create a separate book site.

Interesting essay about fruit and vegetables, how they’re named, and what they’re made of.
The first thing I’ll clear up is that ‘vegetable’ is pretty much meaningless: it’s not the opposite of fruit [...], and it’s not the opposite of plants you eat for pudding (carrot cake, courgette cake, rocket and raspberry salad, etc.), and it’s [...]

Fun With Words has a Glossary of Linguistics and Rhetoric that defines words related to, well, linguistics and rhetoric. An example:
sesquipedalian: of a word, having many syllables; of a person, tending to use long words.
I discovered that paraprosdokian means…
(That’s a joke. Look it up!)

CBC radio has an annual debate to determine what book every Canadian should read. This year they choose Guy Vanderhaeghe’s "The Last Crossing". The winners from previous years are:
2003: The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnston
2002: In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje
I haven’t read any of them.

Book Bytes is a wonderful site designed by a woman who loves books. The site’s design has a non-professional appearance, but it’s easy to navigate, and her writing is clear and concise. Her introduction to the site describes what I wish I pursued, instead of becoming a software developer:
I’m a book person. I’ve [...]

Here’s a nice, detailed photo of my first Krispy Kreme donut, which I had a couple of weeks ago in Detroit. Hmmmm Mmmmm!

This is the coolest sand sculpture I’ve ever seen:
It’s featured at Grow A Brain.

I’m playing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for the Playstation 2, and it’s a blast. The game-play is linear; not a lot of friggin’ around with mazes, figuring out what to do next, which I like a lot; and the cinematics, controls, and character actions are really cool - a fun game to [...]

James Macdonald is an author of science-fiction and fantasy whom I never read, but he appears to have written well-liked books and stories.
He started a thread at this forum titled Learn Writing with Uncle Jim, with this stipulation:
…everything that’s said should be true, and everything should be helpful.
An example from the thread:
Back before I went [...]

The Flashback Underground Archive has a collection of books that I’ve seen mentioned in 2600 - The Hacker Quarterly and other defiant-type publications. Some examples:
The Basics of Hacking: Introduction
Guide to Lock Picking
CIA Book of Dirty Tricks #1
