Spider-Man Is Back
My wife and I saw Spider-man 2 a couple of days ago. The first one was neat, seeing how they brought the comic hero to the big screen using the latest special effects; but in the end, it bored me: I didn’t care about the plot except where it developed the main characters, and the enemy seemed too cartoony. Spider-man 2 is much better, though.
I was laughing within the first couple of minutes after the opening credits of Spider-man 2 ended. The acting seemed better, less contrived. The humor was subtle and personal, making you empathize with the characters. And the action sequences are astounding; I found myself exclaiming out loud at some scenes. It was a fun time at the theater, and I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.
I can see how you’d feel this way about Spidey #2. You’ll probably get a lot of agreement on it. But I didn’t think it was any better than the first one, which I didn’t think was very interesting or entertaining. This one took forever to get off the ground. Spider-Man’s relationship with “MJ,” his inner conflict — all that stuff — put me to sleep. Because in the end, it just doesn’t matter. I felt nothing for the characters, especially MJ. The acting, especially MJ’s scenes, seemed like something out of a soap opera TV show. As for the action — i.e. the special effects, because there is no action that isn’t special effects in this movie — the big fight on the train was kinda fun to watch. But by the time I got to the end, I felt like I was watching cool special effects, not people. And for this reason, I found the action sequences — my main reason for seeing this movie — to be somewhat less than astounding. And for so much of the movie there wasn’t any action, and I was so bored, so uninvolved with the story. It wasn’t a terrible movie, but like all the Harry Potter special effects dependent movies, I found it kind of soulless. To really enjoy a movie, even a comic book action movie, I have to care at least a little bit about what’s going on, and I didn’t. I enjoyed the opening credits the most.
Writing the above comments on Win98 laptop, most of my comments window as blocked over by the menu — and I couldn’t read most of what I was writing. So it came out more sloppy than usual.
But it does matter. I can’t imagine a world without Spider-man!

I think the dance scene in Napoleon Dynamite was inspired by this GIF.
I watched napolean dynomite again last week. Was more funny than the first time I watched it. I didn’t remember 90% of the storyline. I want the soundtrack to it, it’s all those little synth songs from little keyboards. I like your sleeves.
