Me And My Teddy Bear

Jody posted this at 3:10 pm under life, music & audio

The Domin8trix writes about knowing children songs better than the classic rock songs she grew up with:

i hate that i could be driving along, belting out some really awesome tunes*. instead, i pull up at a red light, look the driver opposite me dead in the eyes, and squeak:
hello from the small mouse, things to do, FUN FOR YOU! howdy from the big bear…pillows full of fluff there etc.

There are two points I want to make about that:

  1. The musicians playing these children songs are awesome. The Blue’s Clues band does excellent jazz and other genres. The piano and guitar playing in the Bear in the Big Blue House theme is fantastic - it’s great jazz. I’ve learned to block out the singing except for some of the Veggie Tales tunes:

We are the pirates who don’t do anything!
We just stay home and lie around.
And if you ask us to do anything, we’ll just tell you…
    We don’t do anything!
  2. Before my daughter arrived, I promised myself to not get caught up in the children song craze, and teach my children non-children songs from artists I liked. Of course, that promise was broken long ago; it’s hard to find non-children oriented artists that write bouncy, children-like songs. The Rheostatics have some good ones (i.e. Story of Harmelodia), and Peter Gabriel’s Me And My Teddy Bear is a nice lullaby-like tune I play on the piano for her.

So, like Domin8trix, I have children songs playing in my head more than any other type:

If there’s a place you wanna go,
I’m the one you need to know,
I’m the map,
I’m the map, I’m the map, I’m the map

I need a Tylenol.

    those dora tunes are catchy.

I was really happy when They Might Be Giants came out with their kids CD. And it has some fun flash games on it too.
