The late Douglas Adams explains why “42″ is the meaning of life:

I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought ‘42 will do’ I typed it out. End of story.

    I find it an odd coincidence that the number 42 is referenced in Carrolls writtings a number of times. It appears in Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, as well as The Hunting of the Snark.
