I Have No Shame

Phillip posted this at 2:39 pm under internet & computers, music & audio, phillip's room, wwr

In a previous post, just a few days ago, I discussed the possibility of my recording a live radio show for Whole Wheat Radio, something Jim could cue up on a morning when he really didn’t want to turn on the mic. Well, last night my girlfriend, Jenny, and I recorded a one-hour show, but things didn’t go so well. The sound from Jenny’s microphone wasn’t actually recorded; wearing my new uncomfortable headset made me feel tied down; trying to talk with the headphones pushing against my ears felt totally unnatural; the music came in way too loud at times; and the ease of conversation that Jenny and I usually have was completely absent. Once you hit that RECORD button, man, things change.

That is to say, within in five seconds of saying hello, my IQ dropped by about half, I lost the ability to speak coherently, and I became this drooling babbling idiot who didn’t have enough sense to shut-up.

Nevertheless, I have no shame (that’s a prerequisite), and so I’ve selected 11 little pieces from the show that should give you an idea of what it was like.

  1. Intro to Mud Songs [removed] - basic intro, explanation of the show, talking about how unnatural it feels with the headphones on.
  2. Sweet Baby James [removed] - introducing song by Jim and Esther.
  3. Heartfelt Jim [removed] - commenting on Jim’s singing.
  4. Losing It (2:07) - falling into a laughing fit, unable to speak (includes a “blog alert”).
  5. Composure [removed] - regaining my composure.
  6. Going to Townes [removed] - reading a short Townes Van Zandt bio.
  7. Highway Kind [removed] - introducing Lyle Lovett’s cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Highway Kind” (from Townes Van Zandt Central).
  8. The Be Good Tanyas [removed] - listening to RealAudio samples of “Horses” and “Ship Out on the Sea,” from The Be Good Tanyas website (hear me talking over one of the songs, not realizing the mic is on).
  9. Microphones [removed] - clip from Jimbob talking about microphones.
  10. Hats Off to Jimbob [removed] - talking about how this ain’t easy.
  11. Signing Off [removed] - saying goodbye, cueing up my song, Something Else.

The techincal aspect of recording a show took most of the fun out of it (I’ll talk more about that later in the comments for this post if I have time). That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, but I’m not going to try it again until I’ve sorted out the techinical difficulties.

(Special thanks going out to Jim.)

Update (Jan. 05/06): Most of the original podcast has been removed. Sorry.

I am stunned. It is outstanding! I really really hope you can keep doing them on whatever schedule lets it continue to be fun for you. THANK YOU!

I thought it was great, Phillip! Loved the subtle belch at 1:36 during the intro…haha. I couldn’t help but laugh along with you during the “Losing It” segment too! You’ve definitely got that radio voice and the commentary was right on cue to what I would have expected. Keep it up, I want to hear some more in the future.
