The Beer Trilogy - Episode IX: New Zealand

Phillip posted this at 2:56 pm under music & audio, phillip's room, reviews

Steinlager BeerIn this 6-minute beer review, Will Simpson and I sample a bottle of Steinlager from New Zealand. Unlike most of the beer reviews posted so far, this one is actually informative.

Technical notes: (1) Will sent me his review as an MP3 file, and then I recorded my review so that when the two were edited together, it would sound like a real conversation was going on, sort of. (2) I messed up the compression on this one, so, if you listen to it, you might want avoid using headphones. Otherwise all the sharp K sounds could end up popping your ear drums.

P.S., I stole the background music from J-Walk (I refuse to pay his outrageous copyright fees).

I’ve enjoyed all your beer reviews, ‘informative’ or not. I think I heard you say that they were going to end - that’s okay cuz if you’re not into it there’s no point in doing it. I always enjoy them though. Reviewing ‘normal’ beers like Bud and Coors and other non-beers could be pretty funny. :-)

    Nicely edited, and enjoyable.

I don’t mind recording them, Jim, but I’m really not much of a beer drinker these days (I don’t know how I’ve recorded 8 of these things so far), and I don’t know what else I can say about beer. I think Will lends some credibility to the reviews, because he does seem to know more than me, or at least has more to say than me, which is excellent — but as for me, I got nothing.

Now for some technical notes about this last beer review: I wish I hadn’t screwed up the compression so badly. Considering, though, the technical difficulties of editing and recording around audio that wasn’t pre-scripted to sound like a conversation, I suppose it didn’t turn out too bad. If we do it again, I’ll ask Will (or whoever else wants to do it) to send me a higher-quality MP3 file if possible. Trying to make the EQ of my audio and Will’s audio sound alike is where I messed up with the compression. Good enough for a first-time at bat though. I’ll do better next time (if there is a next time).
