Lyle Lovett - Looking Across the Border

LYLE LOVETT - LOOKING ACROSS THE BORDERThis morning I was listening to a Lyle Lovett album called Looking Across the Border. I suppose it could be subtitled “The Best of Lyle Lovett,” but that’s not really it either. It’s a selection of my personal favourites from his first five albums (with two Townes Van Zandt covers thrown in at the last minute). I made this CD around 1997-98. I remember because it’s the first CD I burned off after I got a CD burner. (Funny to think CD burners have been around for eight years.)

As much as I like him, I don’t pay much attention to Lyle Lovett these days; his version of country is a bit too clean for my tastes. But I still listen to this homemade CD from time to time, which I think provides not just an excellent introduction to his music, but (even better) can point one in the direction of his major influences: singer-songwriters like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt.

So if you’re interested, here’s the line-up (and a sample from each track): 1. North Dakota; 2. This Old Porch; 3. If I Had a Boat; 4. Simple Song; 5. Black and Blue; 6. Pontiac; 7. Here I Am; 8. Nobody Knows Me; 9. The Blues Walk; 10. If You Were to Wake Up; 11. Family Reserve; 12. She’s Already Made Up Her Mind; 13. Baltimore; 14. Flyswatter Blues; 15. Fat Babies; 16. Creeps Like Me; 17. Old Friend; 18. It’s Just the Morning; 19. Moon on My Shoulder; 20. Skinny Legs; 21. Flyin’ Shoes; 22. Highway Kind.

Songs taken from: Lyle Lovett (2); Pontiac (3-6); And His Large Band (7-10); Joshua Judges Ruth (11-14, 1); I Love Everybody (15-20); Step Inside This House (21, 22).
