Haven’t read the book (i.e., Hitch Hiker’s), and I’ve heard similar
comments from people who have read the book. I guess knowing the
source material, you get more of the in-jokes and what not. Jenny, who
read the book, also liked it more than I did. Still, judging only
from what I saw on the screen, I don’t think it comes together well as
a movie. I got a few good chuckles from it, but I wasn’t entertained;
I was so bored, I nearly fell asleep. As far as not-so-great movies go, though, you could do worse.

I really liked Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I haven’t read the book since I was a kid, but the bits and pieces were brought back from the scenes in the movie. Have you read the book? I would think that would make a huge difference with this movie.

Serenity is indeed based on the short-lived television show, Firefly. It’s a potent combination of western and science fiction with lots of humour (but not silly humour - dry, dry wit). I have the series on DVD, and I’d heartily recommend it.

Still, I have the movie network and I pay $240 a year for that. I still end up going to the theatres about 10 times a year. Most of them are kids movies. I also rent about 1 movie a month from the video store or PPV. We are a bored society. That is why the actors and athletes get paid more than scientist and doctors.

31 times is about half as much as last year, and since August I’ve cut way back, so in 2006 I suspect I’ll see maybe 20 movies in a theatre, if that. And I never pay full price for a movie (I go to matinees), nor do I buy any food, and I manage to snag about $100 worth of free ticket every year. It’s still probably about $200. Damn.

I am disappointed Phillip. 31 times viewing movies at a movie theatre. If you break that down, you paid $300 minimum. Then you have to include the $300 for popcorn and shit like that. Popcorn! That’s nuts. I am not any better I guess. I already went to see Narnia this year with the whole family. I paid $40 plus and I had a $20 gift certificate. It could have been $60!

BTW, I think White Noise and Assault on Precinct 13 are already on the movie network. White Noise sucked and I think I will give Precinct a shot.

“Barton Fink” was a borderline movie for me. Overall, I don’t think it really works, but it has a style I enjoyed, and good performances, but if you’re not in the mood for it, it’ll waste your time. I admire the Cohen Brothers, but many of their movies are over-rated. “Fargo” is one of the worst movie I’ve ever seen. I saw it twice because everyone kept telling me what a great movie it is; I still think everyone is wrong.

I agree about “Million Dollar Baby.” When I saw it, I thought it was a good movie. But a month later I completely forgot about it, and have no desire to watch it again. (Though it’s still not a terrible movie.)

“Serenity” was fun, and I can see there being a sequel. But I wouldn’t give it a ‘possibly great film’ rating (8). I think it has more appeal to people who know the TV show (what is it, Firefly?). The same way “Walk the Line” will have more appeal to Johnny Cash fans. As movies, I think both of them are good but not great.

“Predator 2″ sucked. It had some cool things about it, but in the end it was like watching an old episode of Miami Vice, but with Predators. I like watching bad science ficiton stab ‘em, shoot ‘em, kill ‘em movies (I thoroughly enjoy “Ghost of Mars” even though I know it’s junk), but “Predator 2″ took itself too seriously, which is the worst things these kind of movies can do.

We seem to have similar taste in movies. A few things; The Wild Bunch is very dated, but when it came out it was so innovative. The same for Once upon a time in the West. I thought Predator 2 was actually pretty good. But I can NEVER understand why so many people liked Barton Fink. I thought it was one of the five worse movies I ever saw in my life.
Last years movies mostly sucked, but I really liked Walk the Line, and Serenity. Million Dollar Baby was an overblown weepy soapbox movie.
