I Don’t Do Drugs
I had a persistent, hacking cough for three weeks, sometimes having coughing fits that made me gag. Last Wednesday my daughter and I went to the doctor, because her cough hasn’t been going away either. The doctor said she was fine; the cough would go away soon. He said I had bronchitis, prescribing me two drugs: Tussionex and Apo-Cefuroxime. The 2nd day after taking them, I got worse: vomiting, migraine, dizziness… I stayed home and slept all day, not eating anything. That night a headache kept waking me up. The next morning the headache was gone, but I was feeling lousy, partly because I was hungry and dehydrated, and sick; but I went to work, deciding not to take those drugs anymore, and by lunch I was feeling better, eating normally.
So, what the hell was in those drugs I took (and won’t be taking any longer)?
Tussionex was prescribed for my cough, to suppress it. It’s a narcotic. From the pamphlet the pharmacist gave me:

I quit after 1 teaspoon.
The other prescription, Apo-Cefuroxime, is for the bronchitis infection. Possible side effects:
Nice. I only had the nausea and vomitting.
So, I have nearly full prescriptions of two deadly drugs I’ll never take again, although my cough IS gone.
Most medicines have those side effects. I remember watching an infomercial on a psoriasis drug and one of the side effects was skin cancer! Jesus!
Yeah, the two drugs I got from my doctor last time (and the time before that, something a little different but the same) for pneumonia had all those side effects on them. I didn’t feel any of them except dehydration, but I was guzzling water anyhow so it wasn’t bad.
My cough’s finally gone this week, or maybe last week.
man just take the buckly’s mixture…cure anything,peel the paint off anything..or just chew a piece of pine tar…the only thing we got as kids was bucklys and a slathering of vicks vapor rub…..i would refuse to admit to being sick just so i would not have to drink that vile pine tree concoction…
Most modern medicines seem to have worse “possible” side effects than the symptomes they are intended to treat. You will hear the term “small chance”, but it doesn’t matter if you are the “small chance”. I believe that just the passage of time along with proper rest and adequate hydration goes a long way.
