Good Food

Phillip posted this at 11:02 am under appreciations, food & drink, phillip's room

I had an excellent soup and sandwich lunch yesterday at place called “Food on the Run” in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The place has been around for about a year. I didn’t realize it was called “Food on the Run” until yesterday. It’s described in the resturant listing as a “Mediterranean cafeteria and grocery featuring daily selections, house soups and signature sandwiches.” For a place that serves such excellent food, it’s too bad they don’t have a more interesting name. I’ve walked past it about a thousand times in the past year, and didn’t think until yesterday to give it a try.

I picked a sandwich made from one of those soft but crusty triangle things, whatever those are called. It was a whole grain triangle sandwich with some kind of Mediterranean roast beef, tomato, cheese, and I touch of something that might have been horse raddish, but probably wasn’t. I chose to have it grilled, which was a good move. It was the best sandwich I’ve ever had. I turned to Jenny and said, “You have to try this.” She took a bite and we both sat there in a state of awe. That’s the best I can tell you.

Carrot and Ginger Soup. That’s the one I picked. Who ever thought to put carrot and ginger together in a soup? I chose it thinking anyone who has the guts to serve up carrot and ginger in a soup must know what they’re doing, and I was right. Jenny, who’d been having a bad day, ordered the same soup, and it turned her day around. It was unbelievably soothing and delicious. We sat there in awe, again.

I ordered a coffee with my sandwich. I normally take cream, but they gave me milk. I’m not often impressed by the gourmet coffees served at cafes around town; they’re rarely as good as the coffees I make at home. But again I found myself turning to Jenny and saying, “You have to try this,” so we could experience it together. It was the best coffee I’ve ever tasted outside my house. A perfectly smooth medium roast. It made me feel like I was in another country.

So if you’re ever around for lunch in St. John’s, Newfoundland, you might want to check out “Food On The Run,” across the street from the Delta on New Gower Street.

Next time things get this slow on Steel White Table, I’ll tell you about “Sun Sushi” and “The Sprout.” Cheers.
