Thanks to Jim at Whole Wheat Radio for bringing this to my attention. I’d pay good money to see this guy live. Andy McKee:

When I first got a guitar, I happened to stumble upon open-tunings myself just goofing around. I spent hours noodling and just loved to hear the chord ring out while decorating with various little effects. But then I started feeling guilty because I “wasn’t really learning how to properly play guitar”.

What a shame that I let academics get in the way of enjoyment. I wonder if there is a whole movement of players who use open-tunings almost exclusivey and are able to do so proudly and without fear that a “real guitar player” will laugh at them. Because I’ll bet there are thousands of creative and talented individual out there who give up playing because it takes so long to become as expressive as this guy is due to the ‘quirky’ mechanics of the instrument.

Oddly enough, piano I am completely comfortable improvising on - taking horrendous liberties with tonal rules and scales - maybe because all those keys and notes just beg to be touched in randomlike ways.

Yeah, this guy was an inspiration for me to try open-tunings again someday before I’m all arthritic.
