September 3rd Tomato Report

Phillip posted this at 9:33 am under gardening, movies, tv & video, phillip's room

Back by popular demand, here’s the latest report on the tomatoes in my greenhouse. The video was recorded on my Sony Cyber-Shot camera. The audio and video quality isn’t the best, but it’s better than YouTube and who cares; they’re just tomatoes.

We grew tomatoes, lettuce, beans, peas, cucumbers, radishes, and garlic. The garlic is almost ready for harvest, which I’ll take photos of. The cucumbers are over a foot long, the tomatoes are as big as your fist (we picked five today - lots more to go. We also picked a big bowl of beans today, which we’re having for supper. Good stuff.

I made some pickled green tomatoes yesterday from green tomatoes I had to pick early because they were developing rot. I got 5 1/2-pint jars from it. I had a Big Beef tomato ripen on the vine yesterday. It’s funny how one tomato will ripen while the rest on the plant are completely green.

I’ve pruned off all the blossoms and small tomatoes which don’t have much hope of developing in the next couple weeks. The plants are slowly beginning to die now with the cold days and nights kicking in. Most of the leaves are pale green, where they used to be dark green. Most of the large tomatoes show no sign of ripening, though I have one plant outside, a Scotia tomato plant that looks pathetic but is full of tomatoes that are slowly becoming a darker green, which is usually a sign they’re about to ripen.

If I’m living in this house next year (though we hope to have our own house by then), I think I’ll just dig up the ground in the greenhouse and plant everything in the ground — instead of big buckets where the root system and nutrients are limited.
