Worst Movies of 2007

Phillip posted this at 10:36 am under movies, tv & video, phillip's room

These may not be the worst movies of 2007, but they are the worst movies I saw this past year, if not the most disappointing. I’ve listed them from “best” to worst. (I’m not waiting for the end of the year to post this list because I’m confident I won’t see anything this bad for the rest of the year, though Beowulf came close.)

Ratatouille — Pixar movies are so perfect there are no surprises. I get the same feeling from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, films that are so technically brilliant that it’s difficult to find fault with them. I admire them but have never been able to watch them all the way through a second time. They’re boring.

WORST MOVIENotes on a Scandal — Don’t let the two Oscar-nominated performances from Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett suck you into this one. It’s a waste of time.

Live Free or Die Hard
— It’s like watching a video game. CGI explosions are exciting for about 2 seconds, which might work for you if realism isn’t your thing, but for me it was instantly monotonous.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop — The look and feel of this movie reminded me of every CBC-TV crime drama I’ve seen in the past 15 years: too clean and brightly lit to be gritty. I wanted to like it (it’s not all bad), but it did nothing for me.

1408 — Go rent The Shining instead.

The Last Legion — 13-year-olds who don’t know what a clichéd fantasy film looks like might enjoy this one. On par with Xena: Warrior Princess.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix — A soulless, unengaging snoozefest. Why won’t anyone admit that these Harry Potter movies suck?

Spider-Man 3 — Another video game pretending to be a movie.

Night at the Museum
— A Ben Stiller comedy. Enough said.

Transformers — I don’t think I’ve seen anything this bad since Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which is a masterpiece next to this. For mentally deficient Michael Bay fans only.

I predict Phillip will be the only person listing Ratatouille as a “Worst” movie; most everyone else will be including it in their “Best” list.

Meh - I wasn’t overwhelmed by it either. Too long, and the rats were exploited without any real appreciation for their work.

Maybe it’ll be on both my best and worst list.

I plan to watch “Ratatouille” again because everyone’s telling me it’s the best animated film ever made, and so on. But I don’t think so. I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, just that was I bored by it and disappointed. I’d like to see Pixar make a movie with a bit of edge to it, instead of “Toy Story 3.”
