There are many people who use the Bible to promote their own agendas. There are churches that try to treat everyone equally, but a church is a collection of individuals, and as such there will always be people that rub you the wrong way, don't promote the church views, etc. People will always be people. There are Churches that while not perfect, do promote equality. There is a difference between religion and church, although in Catholicism they seem to be synonymous. There are a lot of faithful Christ followers that want nothing to do with religion. There are churches that adhere too and teach the Lord's word without taking verses out of context for any reason. As for the actual cultural and true meaning of the verses Jody has quoted, a little research will show that they are not to be taken literally and out of context. Sure, let's set up lavish retirement homes for priests but let the nuns rely on their families when they're too old to be of use.
