OTTAWA, October 7, 2008 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Les Salaisons Desco Inc. are warning the public not to consume the Dunn’s Famous brand Smoked Meat pouches described below because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The affected product, Dunn’s Famous brand Smoked Meat, is sold in 1 kg packages containing 6 pouches of 175 g bearing UPC 4 00007 55699 7 and Best Before dates 2008 NO 01 and 2008 NO 02. This product has been distributed only at Costco in Quebec, the Atlantic Provinces and Ottawa.

Listeria has been in the news a lot in Canada recently with recalls from Maple Leaf, a major food company here.

CBC’s site about Listeria has succinct information about the bacteria.

I have some of that smoked meat in my fridge.

I threw the box away when I bought the smoked meat weeks ago, so I don’t know the UPC or Best Before date. Safest thing to do would’ve been to throw it all out; of course, I didn’t: I had a smoked meat sandwich for supper with Dijon mustard. Delicious!
