It’s hard to take anyone’s word on a comedy. The Flight of the Conchords is comic genius to me (the first season, anyway), but I’ve never been able to turn anyone on to the show. I know plenty of people who laugh at everything Ben Stiller does, but he does nothing for me. And sometimes you just have to be in the right mood to get into a comedy. So…
Judged as a comical zombie movie, Shaun of the Dead succeeds completely. I don’t watch zombie movies, but I laughed all the way through this one. The zombies are funny, not scary or gross, and the main characters are hilarious. It’s a clever, smartly-written comedy in a style similar to the UK The Office, but with zombies. It’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen for a long time.
this is one of my favorites…the ending perfect….hot fuzz…okay…but I did not believe quite as good….
in terms of funny movies..erik the viking comes to mind…older…but i think I liked in the same vein as this one…
Hot Fuzz didn’t do much for me either. It was almost too accurate of a parody.
Gotta agree! “Shaun” was clever and hilarious! I guess I just ‘get’ Simon Pegg.
I never saw it. Is it violent?
It’s not for kids, but I’m not sure I’d call it hard violence.
By the way, if you’re worried about violence, you’re not going to like The Wire. Lots of people getting shot.
I’m not worried about it, I just don’t like gratuitous violence.
gratuitous — given unearned or without recompense; not involving a return benefit, compensation, or consideration; not called for by the circumstances : unwarranted.
Shaun of the Dead — all the violence involves chopping off or smashing in the heads of zombies, but not dwelling on it; there’s blood, but it’s not like the hacking off of limbs just for kicks in Kill Bill; it’s pretty ridiculous.
The Wire — more than a few bad guys (and some cops, but mostly bad guys) get shot, either in the head or in full bodied from a shotgun; it’s affective, but it makes a point every time; it brings home the reality of the streets.
I told you so!
As for you whiners about the violence in this movie. Hello! They are zombies. I rest my case.
