Townes Van Zandt Online
Speaking of Townes Van Zandt, I’ve tried to find samples of his music online, but it ain’t easy. All the websites dedicated to him are poorly maintained, includuing Townes Van Zandt Central where you can get the latest news and (at your own risk) order DVDs and CDs. Under the links section of that website, though, there’s a link to another sad looking website called the Townes Van Zandt Blue Sky Homepage, and in a section of that site, I found the following recordings. The quality ain’t great, but it’s the best I could find, and it should give you an idea of what he actually sounds like.
This is Townes singing Stonewall Jackson’s Cuz Your Mine, his own Dollar Bill Blues, Jimmy Roger’s Hobo Bill (where Townes takes a crack at yodeling), Snowin’ on Raton with Blaze Foley, and Hank Williams’s You Win Again.
Also on the site are Nothin’ and Highway Kind by Trees and Frenk. (I have no idea who they are, but they do a good job playing these two Townes songs.)
Someday when I learn how to play guitar for real, I’m going to record an album of nothing but Townes Van Zandt covers, and I’m gonna call it MUD SONGS (this is how I originally decided on calling my website, my podcasts, my webcasts, etc., Mud Songs).
P.S., I’ve written to Townes Van Zandt’s widow informing her about Whole Wheat Radio and how I think Townes would fit in perfect with what they’re all about, but I don’t think her email is working.
P.S. #2: My other post about Townes Van Zandt.
