Movies I’ve Watched - 2008 (#6)
I haven’t had much time to watch movies for the past two weeks. I enjoyed all these movies, though, including Woody Allen’s Small Time Crooks which will have to wait until next time.
The Bank Job — Not a great heist movie but good enough. It follows the basic formula and it works. There are some unpleasant blood-letting scenes and perhaps a bit too much serious drama here and there — which kind of goes against the let’s-just-have-fun attitude I prefer in heist movies — but the lead villain, Jason Statham playing exactly the same character he plays in all his movies, has enough charisma to keep things interesting. (Mar. 15/07)
The Lives of Others — One of the most compelling, intriguing and eye-opening films I’ve seen in years — and sadly, it’s relevant too. I can’t add much to the linked review, so here are some quotes: “The Lives of Others is an excellent German film about life in the East German GDR before the fall of the Berlin Wall, when the population lived in constant fear of the secret police known as the Stasi. Writer-director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s story of artists under surveillance by merciless, corrupt officials is gripping from beginning to end… [We learn] something about the arrogance, corruption and twisted psychology that result when “security” bureaucracies are given special powers.” It’s difficult to shake the impression that Stephen Harper, the current Prime Minister of Canada, would love to have this kind of power in his government. The amendment to Bill C-10 is just the beginning. This guy has got to go! (Mar. 9/08)
The Graduate — If The Catcher in the Rye was a movie, this would pretty much be it. (Mar. 8/08)
Commentary for just about every movie I’ve watched or re-watched for the past couple years is posted on Mud Songs.

I will admit my bias with my backround in maritime history, work at the museum in halifax…and a faimiliarity with the story…and perhaps older now and with children of my own…may have all influenced my reaction….but go rent deep water…you too jody….it was between this and the video game one you suggested….
