Victoria’s Secret
My wife recently received an order from Victoria’s Secret. Her order came with a free catalog.
Thank you, thank you.

I opened a dusty bottle of Ardbeg today. It’s been sitting on my shelf for a few years.
The aroma was divine. Swirling it around in the small glass brought forth fragrances of peat, iodine, and citrus; and then a splash of water…
Moments like that I’d prefer to share with a fellow scotch lover.

I might be on CBC Radio’s ‘Spark‘ program next week because of a comment I posted at their blog-like site concerning How-to videos. The show’s producer emailed me, asking me to leave an audio recording of my comment:
We’d love to use your voice on the show. I’d need this in the next day or [...]

Jean’s almost a “Painting A Day” features excellent oil paintings that she briefly describes with a good selling price. She occasionally articulates her love of the art and its learning process:
I am energized and confident. I know I am in the process. There is no end. You just continue to do and as [...]

I just read an interview with Tom Waits from a year or so ago. Apparently Tom likes the sound of bacon. When asked, “Do you have a favourite sound?” he answered:
Bacon. In a frying pan. If you record the sound of bacon in a frying pan and play it back it sounds like the [...]

I went snow shoeing yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had. Big deal, right? You’re walking around the snow with big flat things tied to your feet. But snow shoes work. I was able to walk on top of the snow without falling through. It sure made walking in the woods [...]

Chess champ Bobby Fischer died at age 64 yesterday, Jan. 17, 2007. He was a nut in his later years, but he’s considered one of the best chess players ever. His greatest legacy is probably his influence on chess for young players, inspiring generations to learn chess at an early age, like me.

Once in a while (I think this might be the first time), someone leaves a comment so good, it deserves its own post. Tommyboy posted this comment under my frog in my salad post:
Thanks, Lyn, I forgot all about this post, and I am laughing again.
While Phillip may in fact be a pathological liar, I [...]

I’m going on vacation soon. I hope to doing some camping, hiking, fishing and kayaking in Gros Morne National Park for about a week or so.
Have you ever been there? Can you tell me about your experiences there? Are there any specific areas you recommend I check out? Any specific activities? What’s the best place [...]

Firefox doesn’t support opening Windows executable files (i.e. files with an .exe extension); you have to save it, then manually run it. I missed the ability to execute a program directly from a browser (as Internet Explorer allows).
The OpenDownload add-on fixes that. When you click an executable, the dialog now has a “Run” [...]

Okay, I know you all know who Donald Knuth is, but just to waste some bandwidth, I’ll provide his background anyway:
Knuth wrote The Art Of Computer Programming, considered the Bible of computer programming for those with an academic background. I remember seeing the beige, hard-cover volumes at MUN’s book store for graduates, yet I [...]

I love this photo of Johnny Cash. His expression drives home the poignancy.
Johnny Cash Gives You the Finger provides a good write-up about it and its origin:
…[the photographer] snapping pictures of Cash before a concert at San Quentin Prison, asked Cash for a shot “for the warden,” and got this result.

Even if you’re not a big beer drinker, as long as you appreciate good beer, there’s no way you’ll not love the red ale from The Brew House. It is the best beer I’ve ever tasted. There may be one or two factory-bottled beers that come close, but for quality and flavour, this stuff can’t [...]

Here are websites I read regularly. Most of them are in my Google Reader account. They’re not in any particular order. I’ll put these sites on a non-post page sometime.
Sedition.com: His wit is often way over my head, especially with his QueryLog site, which I’ve posted about before. I don’t remember [...]
