Microsoft Money Is Being Discontinued

Published by Jody under consumer, internet & computers

This surprised me: Microsoft to Discontinue Money:
Microsoft Money products will no longer be available for purchase after June 30, the company said. Existing customers will be able to continue using the product and accessing online services per their user agreements.
I’ve been using Microsoft Money since it came free with Windows 95. They stopped providing yearly [...]

The Best Selling Car

Published by Jody under consumer

America’s best-selling car isn’t what you might think…
Little Tikes Co. of Hudson, Ohio has released sales figures for its iconic Cozy Coupe showing that it has outsold all of those four-door family sedans throughout its 30-year production run. That’s right, the red plastic coupe with the yellow top turns 30 this year, and last year [...]

The Best Popcorn Maker

Published by Jody under consumer, food & drink

I bought a new popcorn maker recently and it’s the best I’ve ever had. It works like this one:

You put a couple teaspoons of oil in the bottom, then 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels, put the cover on and turn it on. A metal rod that sits on top of the hot plate [...]

Country Music

Published by Jody under consumer

I glanced this on CNN’s front page:
Dierks Bentley, Martina McBride, Julianne Hough, John Rich and Gretchen Wilson and more! Country’s biggest and hottest stars get personal with Larry King!
I haven’t heard of any of them except Larry King.
What happened to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Pride, etc. They all dead?
Holy crap – I just [...]

I Think I’m Going To Get A Manual Lawn Mower

Published by Jody under consumer

Reel mower – The good the bad and the ugly has almost convinced me to invest in a manual lawn mower. I’ve been considering getting one for years to replace the dirty, loud, stinky gas-powered machine that’s so heavy only I can push it.
Two things have been holding me back from buying one:

Its effectiveness. [...]

A Complaint About KFC/Taco Bell In Dieppe, NB

Published by Jody under consumer, food & drink

I emailed Taco Bell about poor service and they now seem to be fishing for a way for way to compensate me for my inconveniene. From their email:
…we would really like the opportunity to make this right. Please let me know if there is anything we can do for you to rectify this situation.

Tin Can Solar Panels

Published by Phillip under consumer, phillip's room, science

In a report released by Corporate Knights: The Canadian Magazine for Responsible Business, Newfoundland received a failing grade for environmental protection and renewable energy initiatives. Only one other province received an overall lower grade. That’s embarrassing.
I suggest if Premiere Danny Williams wants to improve that grade, how about providing a small rebate that would [...]

CIBC Cards Compromised

Published by Phillip under consumer

Has anyone had problems with their debit or credit cards from CIBC or President’s Choice lately?
A friend sent me this email:
I just called CIBC. Turns out my CIBC Visa was also compromised. That’s alongside my PC debit card from last week.
Someone tried to charge one dollar to my Visa at a website called Snap Fish.
Anyway, [...]

Corporate Guilt

Published by Jody under consumer

In An Americano With an Extra Shot of Guilt, Please, Darren Barefoot observes the hypocrisy of a coffee shop, which he sums up nicely:
We’re entirely comfortable selling you an environmentally insensitive product, but want you to feel guilty about giving us your money. Plus, [as filmgoer juan points out on Flickr] we’ve been unwilling or [...]

Do-not-call list = More calls

Published by Phillip under consumer, phillip's room

From the CBC:
Canada’s highly touted do-not-call list is having the opposite effect, leading to more telemarketer calls, says the Consumers’ Association of Canada.
“It’s a travesty,” president Bruce Cran said Friday. “Here we have all these people thinking they were getting rid of incoming phone calls. Anyone who is registered should suspect their phone number is [...]

Acetone In Your Gas

Published by Jody under consumer, science

This video shows how to increase your gas mileage by adding acetone to your gasoline:

Acetone is a solvent, used in paints, plastics, and most anything artificial.
Its claim as an automotive fuel additive to help fuel economy has been tested by MythBusters; they found it reduced fuel economy.
Anyone try this?

The Price Of Life

My Dad has been getting chemotherapy treatment for his cancer the past 10 years. His white blood cell count has been low recently, resulting in the need for blood transfusions.
Last week his doctor recommended a drug that MAY prevent the need for future blood transfusions, which would be easier on his system, ensuring he’s [...]

Amber Nash Does Ah-Ha

Three or four years ago, something like that, I noticed a post on the J-Walk Blog about a ukulele singer-songwriter from Cincinnati, Ohio, named Amber Nash. She was (and I suppose, still is) in a band called Ukebucket. J-Walk’s original posted linked to ukebucket.com (but don’t go there now; their URL has changed) where several [...]
