I went to Future Shop / Best Buy the other day to get a specific wireless N router, but when I got there the sales person tried to pressure me into buying a router that was more than twice as expensive. She threw all kinds of computer jargon in my face and started dissing the brand name of the router I was planning to buy. She was trying to confuse me and convince me to spend more money on something I didn’t need. Had she not taken this approach, I would have at least purchased the router I came in to get. But I was so turned off by her attitude I said, “Well, that’s very interesting. I’ll have to think about it. Thanks.” Then I went across the street and bought my router at Staples.

The router cost more at Staples, but when I went to pay for it, I said, “This router is $20 less at Future Shop. Can you match their price?” They said yes, and that was it. Done deal.

I hate going to Future Shop.

I bought a small remote control helicopter a few days ago because I was walking through the mall and saw the helicopter flying around a kiosk and thought, “That is so cool.” I was instantly hooked. The guy controlling it was an expert. I watched him fly several helicopters, from tiny ones to giant ones, performing all kinds of impressive manoeuvres. He made it look easy (it’s not easy). I asked questions for about 10 minutes, watched the guy fly a few more models, and then bought the cheapest one ($45), which happens to be the most durable model: The Black Hawk. I’ve crashed it about a hundred times in the past few days and it still flies. I doubt I’ll buy a larger model, but this mini-helicopter (it fits in the palm of my hand) is fun to fly around the house — especially for people who like to torment their pets. The manufacturer, Cobra Toys, recommends the Black Hawk mini-helicopter for children over the age of 5. I’d be impressed by any 5-year-old able to control one of these helicopters without crashing it into a wall every 10 seconds. Realistically, here’s the deal:

Don’t expect to do anything other than go up and down for the first day or two. There’s a joystick control for up and down; another stick for left, right, forward and backwards (but good luck on backwards); and a knob that turns left and right to adjust the trim. Just about every time the helicopter takes off, it starts spinning either left or right. Turn the trim knob in the opposite direction of the spin to steady the helicopter. I spend half my time trying to steady the helicopter, adjusting the trim. Even when I’m able to control the flight well, something will eventually cause the helicopter to start spinning and I’ll have to stop the flight (hover and hope the helicopter doesn’t drift into a wall) while I adjust the trim. So far, I don’t think I’ve gone a minute without having to adjust the trim — and that’s usually when the helicopter crashes. Automatic trim would be a huge improvement in the design. But it’s still a lot of fun trying not to crash.

A few flying tips based on my initial experience: 1) Practice going up and down and adjusting the trim; try to land softly. 2) After that, practice taking off, going forward and then landing again. 3) Don’t try to go forward and turn at the same time. An easier method: Go forward. STOP. Turn left or right. Then go forward in the new direction. Save the fancy moves for later. 4) Avoid air conditioners, any kind of fan or rooms with hot and cold air pockets. The helicopter is sensitive to air currents and will easily crash. It’s not an outdoor helicopter.

The controller takes 6 AA batteries. A wire from the controller charges the helicopter. It takes about 20 minutes to charge. The charge will last between 5 and 10 minutes. That might not seem like much, but it’s enough to entertain most beginners. I recommend rechargeable alkaline batteries.

LEDs on the controller are supposed to flash while the helicopter charges, then stop flashing afterwards, but my LEDs don’t do anything. I call that a defect, but I’ve crashed my helicopter too many times to return it, and the non-functioning LEDs don’t effect the flight of the helicopter, so I don’t care.

The instructions are horribly translated (from Chinese, I assume). Exhibit A: “In if the flight does not have the impetus to change the operating lever, but the helicopter still in airborne spun, by now might adjust in your hand on remote control’s vernier adjustment knob, balanced does not spin until the helicopter.” That’s fabulous.

Replacement parts, mainly rotor blades, can be ordered online (something like $5 each). That’s a good thing because I know mine will have more than a few nicks in them before I master the controls.

The helicopter sure can take a beating, which is excellent news for anyone who wants to learn how to fly remote control helicopters without spending much money. If I wanted to buy a larger outdoor model (and some of them are pretty damn cool), starting off small and cheap is a smart way to ease into it. Just don’t be fooled into thinking you can control the helicopter as well as the guy in the mall. (I still don’t know how he managed to do what he did.)

I’ll post updates and perhaps a video in the comments — except for this update:

Jan. 13/10: The helicopter finally died on me. I put it through its paces. Although I did get better at controlling it, none of it was precision flying or landing, and I crashed it over and over again. It probably would have lasted longer if I was more careful with it. It still operates, but the helicopter shakes like crazy and doesn’t get off the ground. It was fun while it lasted. I was just hoping it would last a bit longer. I’m not sure it was worth the money.

You put a couple teaspoons of oil in the bottom, then 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels, put the cover on and turn it on. A metal rod that sits on top of the hot plate revolves, mixing the kernels so they don’t burn. Within a few minutes it’ll start popping. It’s quiet – just a low hum for the motor that turns that rod. EVERY kernel will pop if you have good kernels.

The popcorn maker costs about three times as much as the cheap air-blown ones, but it’s worth it.

Two things have been holding me back from buying one:

Its effectiveness. You have to mow frequently since tall grass will be a choir, and plants with thick stems can be difficult, such as dandelions.

Its maintainability. How often does one have to sharpen its blades, and can you sharpen the blades easily by yourself.

Time to do more research. I’ll create a new post if I get one.

I emailed Taco Bell about poor service and they now seem to be fishing for a way for way to compensate me for my inconveniene. From their email:

…we would really like the opportunity to make this right. Please let me know if there is anything we can do for you to rectify this situation.

Should I take advantage of their offer? If so, what should I ask for? My intention was just to make them aware of the shitty service.

I waited a long time for my order, so I emailed the corporation about my experience:

I’m writing to complain about the poor service at the KFC store in Dieppe, NB, store #1057 (order #287 at 16:29 on April 26, 2009).

I ordered three items in the store for take-out, which was efficient: the young lady who took the order was friendly and pleasant to talk to; however, once the order was taken I waited 10 to 15 minutes at the counter. In that time:
- The cashier continued to take orders, with an ever growing lineup of people waiting for their completed orders.
- The food under the heat lamp that was ready for packing continued fillup, almost over-flowing.
- The cashier didn’t stop to pack completed orders – she just continued taking orders.
- A gentleman behind the counter who appeared to be in a managerial position seemed to be working the drive-through; however, despite walking by the crowded pile of waiting food for our orders, he didn’t direct others to help pack anything nor help the cashier.

We enjoy the occasional KFC and Taco Bell meal, but that’s the second unsatisfactory experience at that restaurant; I won’t be visiting that location again.

I hate to write just to complain, so I AM going to compliment one of your stores: the one in Riverview, NB. The staff there seems to be more knowledgable and caring, making an effort to not just be cheerful but to deliver your order in a reasonable time. That location IS probably less busy than the Dieppe location, but I would think that should matter little.

One thing of note between the two stores mentioned above: the staff at the Dieppe location seemed much younger. The staff in Riverview appeared to be mature adults for the most part. One would hope that employees at all locations would be responsible at all locations, no matter what their age.

They replied within a couple of hours:

Hi Jody,

I’m so sorry you that you had this experience with KFC.

I wanted to let you know that I have forwarded your concern to the franchisee group in your area and they will contact you directly to resolve your concern.

Should you wish to follow up in the mean time you can reach the KFC franchise head office customer service line at 1-800-363-1601.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Their email address was from Yum, which I never heard of before. They’re “the world’s largest restaurant company”.

A couple hours later I received the following:

Hi Jody,

Thank you for your recent email regarding the slow service you received at our KFC/Taco Bell in Dieppe. We would really like the opportunity to discuss this with you further. In your email, you stated that you would prefer us not to call you so I would like to ask you a few questions regarding your visit.

What time of day?
What was your order?
How were the products?

We appreciate feedback from our customers to help us better serve you and others.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the slow service and we would really like the opportunity to make this right. Please let me know if there is anything we can do for you to rectify this situation.

KFC strives to deliver great customer service and we would really like the opportunity to resolve this issue.

Please contact me at your convenience at the number below or email me.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us regarding your concerns…

This email came from Priszm, “one of the largest operators of quick service restaurants in the world” – not the largest.
My response:

Answers to your questions:
> What time of day?
4:29pm is printed on the receipt.

> What was your order?
2 Bean Burritos and the box meal that comes with hard and soft tacos, cinnamon sticks, and some other stuff.

> How were the products?
Very good, although a tad salty. It’s the first time my kids (4 and 8 years old) had Taco Bell products and they both loved them.

> Please let me know if there is anything we can do for you to rectify this situation.
The situation has come and gone, so there’s nothing to rectify to make things right for ME. I just wanted to bring the matter to your attention.

I appreciate the quick replies to my original email.

Their response:

Thank you for your email…

I will follow up with the restaurant regarding your concerns. Again, I would like to apologize for your slow service and I appreciate the feedback. If there is anything we can do for you regarding your poor experience please let me know…

See? They seem to EXPECT me to ask for some compensation.
