For the past two weeks I’ve been cooking fish about every other day on my gas BBQ using a cedar plank to smoke the fish. (See my previous post: Homemade Smoked Salmon.) You heat up the BBQ, place the plank on the grill, give it 5 minutes to heat up, put the fish on the [...]

J-Walk posted an item about an 8 Dollar Fruit. It reminded me of the watermelon in Labrador with the $55 price tag. Apparently it was a pricing error.
The [store] manager said that despite the price tag, the melon’s actual price should have been $38.
Would you pay $38 for this watermelon?

Jenny picked up a cedar plank from the grocery store today. (Yup, it’s just a piece of wood.) We were supposed to soak it for 4 hours, but we didn’t have time. We soaked it in boiling water for about 2 hours instead. We heated up our $89 Canadian Tire gas BBQ to — well, [...]

This post is directed at tommyboy more than anyone, although I’m open to any useful responses:
- How long fresh pasta can last in the fridge (unworked)?
- Does anyone have recipes for ravioli fillings using rapini, swiss chard, or tatsoi?
Ain’t the internet great?

Basic foods I would never ask for:
Fruit: cucumber. Yes, it’s a fruit, and I can’t stand their smell, texture, and taste. I like dill pickles, though. I’m not keen on watermelon, either. Maybe it’s their texture.
Vegetable: pumpkin. Is that a fruit, too?
Meat: liver. Maybe brain and kidneys, too, but [...]

I bought a single tomato this week for $1.67. This is the tomato.
Just saying. (Click image to enlarge.)

I got into making home brew for a while, but I eventually gave it up because, as much as like the beer, I’m just not much of a drinker these days. I still have 50 pint bottles from the last batch I made in March, which will probably last me at least until next summer. [...]

That’s what they should call this stuff, because if the result is a premium beer like they say it is, all the chronic beer drinkers who until now we’re too lazy to make their own home brew will become instantly converted.
2 litres of beer for $6.50 — and considerably cheaper than that if you buy [...]

I accidentally stumbled onto this 4-part home brewing video series on YouTube today. I quickly checked out other home brewing instructional videos, but this guy seems the most thorough. I wouldn’t do everything he does — and I can’t do everything he does because I don’t have the facilities for it — but it’s not [...]

I just read that James Barber died. He was the host of a cooking show called The Urban Peasant. I learned to cook by watching his show. It’s one of the few good things I ever got from watching TV.
I watched more than a few episodes where he was in the middle of making something, [...]

I bought a frozen rooster at the grocery store a couple weeks ago. It was on sale and it was much larger than most of the regular chickens.
It terms or cooking preparation and taste, is there any difference between a regular chicken and a rooster?
And it is true that dogs and cats are colourblind?

I have no idea what a “Gucci” is, but the technique described in How to Turn Cheap “Choice” Steaks into Gucci “Prime” Steaks works on the cheap steaks I’ve tried it with.
Massively salt your steaks 15 min - 1 hour before grilling.
That’s it. It should look like this (image from that website):
