Unfortunately, it’s likely to be the only taste of honey this year. Both hives are establishing themselves this year and will need all the honey to survive the winter. Next year, though, if they survive the winter, there should be plenty of honey to go around.

Frito-Lay has taken two of the most disgusting, unhealthy food products ever invented and have combined them into one.

Normally I wouldn’t recommend any kind of Doritos, but this flavour is surreal. Because it tastes like a cheeseburger. A greasy, meaty, melted-process-cheese-laden hamburger in a sesame seed bun.

It’s a marvel of science that they managed to create that specific flavour and put it on a corn chip. It’s weird and almost amoral. But man, you gotta try it.

This is not a paid advertisement for Frito-Lay. I’m just doing my part to make your day a little more surreal.

Not only does it have more than half your day’s caloric and saturated fat allotment and more sugar than you’d find in Willy Wonka’s candy lab, but Ronald even finds a way to sneak in a full day of cholesterol-spiking trans fat. Yeah. An Umbrella.

Moosehead Cracked Canoe Beer is a “premium” beer, meaning it’s expensive, although I didn’t think it was too much so.

My review: it’s OK. A light lager that hits the spot on a hot day.

I found a YouTube review of it, which appears to be shot in a batroom:

Moosehead is a well known company in Atlantic Canada, famous for their beer of the same name.

(I’m not linking to the Moosehead corporate website because it’s all annoying Flash.)

John Walkenbach is giving away an old computer. He said, “Leave a comment here and tell me what you would do with this computer if you won it. The ‘best’ entry will win it.” I told him I’d send him a few bottles of a special limited edition all-natural honey from my first bee hive this year. The label on the bottles would look something like this.

I haven’t built my bee hive yet (I’m building it today) and I won’t know for a few weeks if I can get bees early enough to have a honey harvest this year. But if it does happen — and I win the computer — I’ll send John as much as I can spare. Even if I don’t win the computer, I’ll just put my name on the label and keep the “Claw Hammer Honey” name. That’s an ingenious name for a brand of honey. I’d buy it.

UPDATE #1: We built our first bee hive today.

UPDATE #2: For the record, this is what I said I’d do if I won the computer: “If I win the computer, I will name him Johnny. I will then make Johnny my slave and use him, with the help of Excel, to calculate how much honey I can produce in my first honey bee hive this summer. Provided the calculations are correct, at the end of the season I will bottle my honey harvest under a commemorative limited edition label, Walkenbach’s Special, and send a couple bottles to Arizona. Next year, I’ll send twice as much.”

UPDATE #3: I didn’t win. And he more or less chose the winner randomly? As Clay Davis would says, “She it.” I can’t believe it. I am stunned. What was the point in trying to bribe him? And I told a half decent story to boot. I feel like a crest-fallen sidekick in an old café. I don’t know how John is going to make this up to me, but it better be good. Real good.

Nobody wants to see how hot dogs are made, but you don’t want to see how factory farm crops are grown either. We’re gradually making ourselves sick with this crap (which includes meats, fruits, vegetables and just about everything sold in supermarkets). We’re not doing the environment much good either. If the information presented in Food, Inc. doesn’t convince you to make healthier food choices and shop at farmers markets, nothing will.

J-Walk posted a link to the 16 Worst Halloween Candies. I agree, most of the 16 are lame except Hersey’s Mr Goodbar which is a hunk of delicious chocolate. It’s hard to go wrong with pure milk chocolate. My favourites are just about anything from this box:

But in order of preference from the box: Kit Kat, the world’s greatest chocolate bar; Coffee Crisp, a bar I never buy because I’ll pick Kit Kat (or maybe a Mars bar) before anything else, but it’s still a appetizing chocolate bar; Aero, a chocolate bar full of bubbles; and Smarties, M&M’s less-addictive second cousin.

The worst Halloween candies are those watered-down toffee candies with Halloween-themed wrappers that nobody except maybe my grandmother when she still had her teeth would eat. Do kids still get those in their trick-or-treat bags?

I did a Google search for schnitzel recipes, discovered I didn’t have all the necessary ingredients, so I improvised, which is all I ever do anyway. I sliced some pork loins about an inch thick; cut them around the edges so they wouldn’t shrivel up on the grill; I took all these ingredients — olive oil, 4 gloves of garlic, various amounts of paprika, curry power, fennel seeds, rosemary, parsley, pepper, kosher salt and probably a few more spices I can’t remember now — and mixed them all together in a big bowl; then I pounded the pork into all it, mushing it up real good, and I let it sit covered in the fridge for a couple hours. Then I just cooked it on the BBQ (or outdoor grill for the purists) with corn on the cob and zucchini fresh from my garden. Done. It may be the best thing I’ve had on the BBQ this summer.
