Good CD-ripper for Vista?

Published by Phillip under internet & computers

I recently got a new PC pre-installed with Vista. It seems like a half decent operating system so far. My main complaint is: things that used to work don’t work anymore because they’re incompatible with Vista. My older version of WordPerfect isn’t compatible with Vista (so I’m switching to OpenOffice). Neither is my older [...]

Firefox Add-on: NoSquint

NoSquint is one of my favourite Firefox add-ons because it makes at least half the sites I visit on a regular basis easier to read by making everything on the site bigger — the text and the images, and it does so without messing up the design of the site because proportions are maintained. Here’s [...]

Mud Songs via WWR

Mud Radio is still out of commission, although there is a chance it might come back on a semi-regular basis before the end of the summer. In the meantime, if you’re in the mood for a little muddish radio, you can request a show on Whole Whole Radio called Mud Songs.
I just created the wiki [...]

Cuba Discovers Computers

This took me aback: Computers go on sale in Cuba for the first time:
President Raul Castro’s government had authorized the sale of personal computers to average Cubans more than a month ago, but they were not made available until Friday.
Computers haven’t been publicly available before now?! Silly communists.

Tap-tap!… I don’t think this thing is on… Hello?!

Published by Phillip under internet & computers

With a direct link from J-Walk’s blog coming at us until May 8th, you’d think we’d milk it and come up with something creative and interesting. But we didn’t.

Still, Donald Knuth Is Alive

Published by Jody under computers, internet & computers

An Interview with Donald Knuth where he talks about open source, reusable code, Linux, and other stuff:
…authors these days often introduce arcane methods that outperform the simpler techniques only when the problem size exceeds the number of protons in the universe. Such algorithms could never be important in a real computer application. I read hundreds [...]

NIFCO’s New Website

Published by Jody under internet & computers

Phillip and I redesigned NIFCO’s website (Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Co-Operative), releasing it to the public today.
The old:

The new:

Phillip’s main job was making the aesthetic decisions, getting the requirements from the customer. My main job was implementing the new look.
I don’t enjoy designing the look of websites. I love the behind-the-scene stuff, but finding [...]

I’ve Never Owned An Apple Product

I have nothing against Apple, the computer company that has a cult-like following, but I’ve never owned any of their products: iPod, Mac, iPhone…
They come out with gadgets that a lot of people think they must have, like the new MacBook Air, which is being promoted as the world’s thinnest notebook. So what?
I’m not [...]

Next Letter

Published by Phillip under internet & computers

This should be easier than J-Walk’s question, probably because everyone has seen it before. (It might be intriguing for those who haven’t seen it before.)
What’s the next letter in this series and why?
O - T - T - F - F - S - S - ?
(For now on, I’m not posting anything unless the [...]

Facebook Doesn’t Like People Aged 98+

Published by Jody under internet & computers

Facebook won’t allow you to enter a birth year of 1910, even though it’s in their list of values; you’ll get a Please enter your real birthday message when you try to save it; but 1911 works.

Jody Cairns

Published by Jody under internet & computers

In April, 2004, I posted about finding myself via google. Back then there were:

108 hits for “jody cairns”
23 hits for “jody r cairns”

I’m more popular now:

“jody cairns”: 2200 hits (All except two hits are about me on the first page.)
“jody r cairns”: only 7 hits (All me.)

What about you?

Search And Listen To Music

Songerize will automatically play a song you search for. I tried it a few times; it was succesful and quick. It failed on a Danny Schmidt tune, so it ain’t that good.

I’m on Facebook {sigh of resignation}

I finally had to give in and sign up to Facebook this week. I had no plans and no desire to hop on to that foolish bandwagon, but it seems everyone I work with has signed up. I feel like I’m surrounded by the Pod People from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It’s reached [...]

Test Your Virus Scanner

I have never gotten a computer virus in my 30ish years of using a PC. I’ve purposely downloaded viruses to see if the damn scanners detect them, in addition to decompiling them to see how they work. I don’t use a virus scanner now; but then, I take pride in knowing what’s on [...]
