Maybe the headings in your menu need to be bolded. Not sure. There is definitely something not right with that menu. Could you send me an HTML sample of the menu, and I’ll dick with it a more attractive but easy to look at menu scheme? In it’s present form it doesn’t draw enough attention to itself; it needs to be easier to read. Something.
I think my idea of displaying a symbol beside each entry is a good idea. Music-related entries have a music note beside them, book entries have a book beside them, etc.
I notice there’s a squooshed up picture of baby’s head (I’m guessing) in the the URL now. And I was thinking, it probably wouldn’t hurt to have that (whatever it is) on the main page right next to “Steel White Table.” I’ve been noticing that basic design on other blogs and it seems to provide a certain character to the pages. (God help me, I’m reading other blogs now.)
That baby’s head is me a couple of years ago, and I don’t think I’ll be posting that image here. I used it initially at WWR because it was the first image I stumbled upon. I don’t want to publicize it THAT much.
Speaking of WWR, I created my own personality there today (even thought I thought I already I had a personality! damn internet)–and I couldn’t get the frigging picture thingy to work. I had a nice pic of me and my Grizzly Adams beard, and it wouldn’t show up. I probably hit the wrong button. Either way, it wasn’t as straightforward as I was hoping it would be. And now a picture of me with a beard is floating around the ethos of Whole Wheat Radio, probably never to find a home with its true owner. Stupid computers.
For the picture thingy to work I had to use a URL. That picture of me on WWR isn’t uploaded to his site; it’s a URL to the on my site. So upload your image and I can put it in my images folder, then I can tell you the URL to use.
I could display who in two ways: 1) by displaying their IP address, which is not meaningful to most, 2) if I enabled visitors to register, so that a cookie would be put on their site which my site could read, to determine who’s online. I could also use cookies to identify users when they enter a comment. I doubt I’ll implement it.
Ryan, you have indeed stolen the lead. I was deliberately holding back until you were in the lead. Having the most posts kinda drove it home that, man, I have no life.
But now, minus the 8 current posts by my alter-egos “Brother Phillip” and “Keith,” you’re still 2 ahead of me, and I plan to keep it that way.
I can’t keep up with all the new posts to this blog! Of the 25 links currently still on this page, I’ve clicked on two of them. I barely have time to skim through your descriptions, let along visit the sites. And what’s up with all these excrement-related sites?
Could you add a link near the “Last 5 comments” section on the sidebar to the last 100 comments or something? Sort of like this messageboard type thing, only with comments from different categories? People usually post 5 or more comments when they surf around the pages, so I have to hunt for a lot of the comments, which are half the the appeal of this site.
Yeah, I’m working on that. In the meantime you can go to the Statistics page (link on top right of menu) and scroll down a bit to see last 10 comments.
Here’s my take on the 5 movies currently playing in the Moncton area (I couldn’t find listings for the Famous Players theatre).
The Terminal. The only one I’d really recommend. Pure fantasy, like some old 40’s movie, but done well. I don’t like Steven Speilberg or Tom Hanks, but I like this movie. It’s not a great film, but it provides an entertaining mixture of dramatic moments and genuine laughs. I enjoyed watching the story unfold. (7/10)
The Day After Tomorrow. I was expecting more destruction, more excitement. In the right hands, these kinds of special effects could be used to create some compelling cinema. Not the case here. An average special effects movie. Could have been better. (6/10)
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. I haven’t seen this one, but it’s got to be better than The Chronicles of Riddick..
The Chronicles Of Riddick. I don’t mind stupid movies as long as they give me something cool to watch. However, this one is just stupid. Lots of special effects, but I felt like I was watching a video game — the whole Maxtrix-2-&-3 Effect. I came very close to walking out of the theatre. (4/10)
Garfield: The Movie. Haven’t seen it. Don’t plan to.
When I click “last 20 comments” while already in a comments view, it puts me back on the main page, not the last 20 comments view. How about making that the last 50 comments? With so many comments lately I’m missing ones that happend 3 days previous cause they’ve already rolled off the last 20.
Nifty super duper site of absolute zero temperatures j0dy, keep up the good work of the lord!
Frig, that “100 greatest guitarist” list thing has spurred so much contraversy and kiddy squabbling, I like to read the stupid posts people put in there where they are trying to show the world why their opinions of the greatest guitarists is the best, while swearing up a storm at other people. Here I thought I was the one bringing down the comment content of your page! :P
I was trying to come up with an idea that takes advantage of that, how such topics spawn useless opinions because the topics are so subjective. Maybe create a page called You’re Opinion Doesn’t Matter, with a list of hotly debated subjects.
Have you ever waited in line at McDonalds to order from their breakfast menu, only to realize that they switched over to the lunch menu just as the customer in front of you completed their order?
It happened to me this morning and I wasn’t happy about it. They only had two cashiers working and I believe they were both training because I waited in line for 15-20 mins.
I went to the company website to voice my dissatisfaction however they don’t have a link to post comments. My only venue to unload my burden on someone else’s ears was here at SWT. Sorry to unleash this anger on you all, but I feel much better now.
somebody is hacking into my computer and i want to get revenge by doing the same to them is it possible if so tell me becouse he stole up to a $10000 from my bank
Interesting. While in the SWT blog section, it tells me that there are 4 users online. But when I’m in this comments section, it tells me that there is only 1 user online. Jody, you’ve got a bug.
I was hoping no one would notice that. It’s because this page isn’t derived from the main index.php page. The about.php has the same problem. I did that for a reason, which I don’t remember now.
I just got back from an advanced screening of an excellent movie called SAINT RALPH, the best movie I’ve seen all year, and probably the best movie I will see all year, and 100% Canadian to boot! I suppose you could call it an underdog story, a coming of age story, etc., but it’s got more heart and soul than most movies coming out of Hollywood. I loved it. I might post a review of it later on.
Hey I just got off this site and went to do my weekly check of e-mails and got a note from Al C….wierd… hey since you are magician and can edit and change comments I now am suspect about all these comments I read, perhaps pender is just your alter ego…I mean I know your a funny guy, but you dont have to hide under a pysdenum, shades of fight club… Hey Im curious e-mail me who was scott talking about, who hated him and who was bubbles oh by the way I hang out with a couple here who are ten years older, who are from New Glasqow and she used to babysit bubbles….the world of the maritimes is two small…
You know someone who used to babysit Bubbles? The real Bubbles or the Bubbles from The Trailer Park Boys?
I think the real Bubbles wound up shacking up with a girl who lived on my street and never took a bath in her life. Probably living in a trailer park now.
Yeah the tv bubbles. Phil that mention of scouts sent shivers….oiy….about two years ago I became a volunteer with a local beaver pack, Anja showed some interest, yes, girls are in beavers now, funny a lot of the priest volunteers no longer help out, did I mention I was an alter boy too….anyway I lasted about six months. I think many of these individuals are cast away cop or military wanna bees.. What a spooky organization or at least the implementation I witnessed. I ve told anja to try and join the masons instead. Why tell you this, because as a leader you were given a “beaver” name. You guessed it…my beaver name…”bubbles”….unfortunatly there are a number of photos around town of some of the beaver events in which I am identified with this nomiker. Yeah coming soon to a strip club near you the svelt the lovable 260 lb bubbles…..
I’ll have to contact the old “hawkEye” leader I quickly disposed of my beaver paraphnila.. the epalets the badges, the fondness for facism it was all too much for me..so gave it to another leader, but I will try..coming soon the 260lb beaver…that has been left open for you pender…
Hey bubbles, we’re different people. Why the hell would he post on his own site and have discussions with himself? He may be crazy, but he’s not that crazyish. He sits 4 cubicles away from me at work and he’s the boss and I may do every little task that pops into his head, but I still assume we’re two people.
I think you got phillip/keith mixed up with jody/me.
Yes I really enjoyed being an Altar boy…the priest was very friendly always insisting to help us with our robes…I think that priest now lives as a guest of the federal government, I think in Springhill, N.S. …….
Actually my carreer as a servent of god was quite brief…there was the wafer incident..myself and Nicky found the box in a storage area where the wafers were stored and decided to challenge each other to see who could consume the most, I think I was just trying to get closer to god… after three or so long tube like packages I gave up it was like eating dessicant…mouth all dry….
The end came after we “borrowed two robes to use for halloween…they were great and those braided ropes were perfect for whipping underlings and siblings….
i saw the new star wars movie today. it was good, and worth seeing. much better than the last two installments, and easily the most dramatic of all the star wars movies. the sound system was all messed up when i saw it, going from mono to surround sound every few minutes, but i stayed for the whole thing and then complained and got free tickets afterwards.
first off: the CGI looks more realistic here than in the previous two films. it’s still looks like CGI, but less cartoonish. the opening battle scenes we’re impressive. so no major complaints about the overall look and feel of this movie. the CGI sets didn’t look so fake this time around. definite improve in the CGI department.
secondly: good story. for once, we’ve got some real character development. i had no problem understanding how anakin turned to the dark side. i’d don’t blame him.
thirdly: lots of dramatic scenes, beginning with sam jackson’s light saber battle scene (he’s more of a real character in this movie, not at all wooden and emotionless like the last two installments) — and they just crank it up from there. obi-wan’s and anakin’s/darth vader’s big fight scene is so over the top it’s almost aburd, but still fun to watch, and the end of the fight is almost hard to watch. (it’s good.)
fourth: when anakin turns to the dark side, he REALLY turns to the dark side. he does some seriously evil shit. which is great.
minor complaint: obi-wan and anakin come off like mel gibson and danny glover at the beginning of the movie, and there are some funny moments, but it would have been better if they’d toned that down a bit. still, it didn’t last for long, so it’s not a big complaint.
otherwise, it was a good movie. too bad lucas didn’t write such a strong story for the two previous installments. had they been even half as good as this one, the star wars mythos wouldn’t have been so tarnished.
ITs alive! Shattered elbow healing but difficult to write…I managed a few lines in regards to environmental distress long time since I thought of that…Bruce B was not involved in that was he?
Haveing difficulties with some actions wiht hand but today took the motorcycle out for a spin very sore arm but very wide smile. Sorry I missed you in Federicton I ended up with severe strep throught got to seee the Oromocto emerge dept. Any way still planning the bike oddyssy next summer…. cheers …I am around just silent…ouch…
Saw the new Batman movie. Not a total waste of time like most of them. Just a straightfoward super hero origins story, with some predictable killing off the obligatory bad guys. Wait for the video.
Jody, I’m sending you an MP3 file I need you to add to the site when you get home (I still can’t FTP anything). I’m telling you through this message board, because it seems lately like all my emails to you and the old folks aren’t getting through.
RSS feed note: I’m in the process of making modifications to several posts, and may continue to do so throughout the day. So I’m guessing a bunch of junk will show up in the RRS feed for the next little while — if my understanding of RRS feeds is correct.
in between toliets I come down here and fiddle around on the computer….hhmmmm did i remember to wash my hands??
hey I didnt know Birdy was on dvd and I was poking around some of the reviews and one claimed there was an adaptation in 2003,,,man you know your gettin old when movies you enjoyed in your youth are being adapted…yeah and one reviewer cut up the soundtrack,,which i know i am biased but i still really enjoy…okay back to work
I am really glad i do not have a computer at home, at least this way I am getting paid to fart around…
Rebecca I was just scrolling through old messages,,yes I have no life…and you mentioned you knitted…my wife used to knit constantly (pre kids) and has just recently taken it up again…she used ot really enjoy kaffe Facet and a Hargreves designer..if you are familar with these designers, do you know of any other later designers who may have similar challenging patterns…I was thinking of getting steph some pattern books but the ladies at the knitting store..love there acryllics and looked at me like I had a second head…she also liked romni wools and some stuff out of NewBrunswick…I have forgotten the name…big fire but I think they are back in business….sorry to bug you but you can always just ignore this and i will cry…get depressed..commit some heinous crime….
Tommyboy, what kind of farmer’s market do you guys have? Here in Charlottetown, there aren’t many actual farmers at the farmer’s market. It’s mostly people selling crafts and pitas and shit. In the whole place, there might be two vegetable tables. When I go to a farmer’s market, the #1 reason is to buy fresh vegetables: brocolli, tomatoes, cucumber, beets, onions, carrots, everything. The Charlottetown farmer’s market doesn’t seem to have much to do with farmers. I wonder if that’s become the norm.
Jody, if you’re going to keep the comments in descending order, can you place the ‘leave a comment’ part at the top so we can read the last message while we’re responding to it?
-we are a not for profit, co-operative managed and admiinstered by a volunteer board of made up of vendors…it is this board that i report and am answerable to…the building is owned by the ciyt..so much of my job is to make sure these two groups “play nice”
in regards to vendors we have a rule in our constitution tthat you must grow or produce what you sell…we have 4 positons available for people who do not meet that requirement, an example would be our antiquarian bookseller…yeah…but if you buy something here the person grew it or made it.
as far as percentages go..at this time of year there is probalbly a 60 70 percent producer based vendors ie farmers, but because we are year round this drops to about 30 percent in the winter months for obvious reasons….snowy no growy.. this time of year about 50 vendors winter about 30
we are fourtunate here ot have a number of organic farmers and some established small ot middle size agricultural operations…but it is hard..who wants to be farmer?
Tommyboy, you don’t know how lucky you are I happened to wander by and see your message :)
Yes, I knit, but I’m still pretty much a novice. The most complicated thing I’ve knit is a pair of socks for my father, and apparently I only had one pair in me. I’ve been struggling with the second pair since April.
And acrylics? Good for some things, but not everything. The NB wool manufacturer you might be thinking of is Briggs & Little - there’s one woman in Sudbury who sells it, but she doesn’t carry much. I love it, though. And Fleece Artists are in NS somewhere, and they have some beeee-yutiful wools and natural fibre stuff. I’m too afraid to knit with it, lest I dishonour it with my novice-ness.
Please don’t hurt yourself - you seem to be in enough pain already :)
thanks rebecca, if you ever get a chance to go out east, the fleece artist re catherine is located out of her home (it was) in lawrence town and is well worth visiting. My wife knew catherine quite well as a knitter. The fleece artist was once housed in a storefront on historic properties in halifax and was quite wonderful to visit even for a non knitter like myself…briggs and litttle that was the name…there is a company here called philosphers wool steph used to knit with it it was good for chunky sweaters becasue of the lanolin content ot the wool….they may have a website…
Tommyboy - apparently I was in your neck of the woods this weekend without knowing it! Didn’t know you were in Owen Sound, or I would have dropped by the market at some point!
Rebecca this is wierd…if i am correct you have a sister named Rachelle…who is seeing a young up and coming musician ( actually I hear he is quite talanted)…yeah if this is so ask your sister about the heavy set guy pining about the maritimes she met at the market…i think i met your sister two weeks ago…
yeah jody gave me your blog site…I am quite inept I could not figutre out how to leave a message…I did not know you were a librarian…my wife says you can not come to visit…you realize that both jody and i are irrationally fond of books…hence your being a librarian automatically means we or at least I will inappropriatly transfer this fondness to you..sorry just thought i d warn you before the stalking begins…
seriously if you ever make it to market on a saturday I’ll treat you to one of our famous breakfast sandwiches…and we have an antiquarian book seller at market…we are not suppossed to but its books… must have books…
oh yeah your list of movies on your site your the first person in about 15 years that knew that buckaroo movie…ahhh the old days watching movies at wormwoods on barington and then gottegin street…idle days of youth….ahhh…hang on i still have idle days i m just creaky and middle aged now…
SWT was down for a few hours in the early AM last night because it woke me up: my daughter and I are sleeping downstairs in my office because it’s cooler than upstairs, and around 2am a revving sound from the computer woke me up. It sounded like something trying to rev up for spinning and failing. It was so loud I turned the machine off. I suspect one of the two fans in the computer: the CPU fan, which would fry the CPU if that failed, or the video card fan, which doesn’t concern me as much. I’m going to take it apart tonight and inspect it.
Tommyboy - “weird” is a weak word to describe this :) Yup, you have indeed met my sister, who is a frequent shopper at the market. And I have heard of the power of the breakfast sandwiches - if they can get Joel to go to the market, they are powerful indeed :) I was at the market a few years ago, and I did see the bookseller - I spent quite a bit of time digging through the wares :)
I am a librarian, although I’m working as a library consultant at the moment. I miss working in the library, but I get to talk to a lot of librarians in the course of a day. I got into the field because I love books and reading and sharing information.
The Buckaroo Bonzai movie is one I saw when I was pretty young, and I remember thinking how strange and wonderful it was. So when I saw the DVD on Amazon, I happily purchased it. I’ve seen it about three or four times now.
My wireless internet connection (which I’m stealing from a neighbour) comes and goes. It was gone for several days there. It’s back at the moment, but I don’t know how long it’ll last.
hey jody is pender still alive or did you send him off to do some meaningless yet crucially important task for the good of the corportation to outer east mongolia, or worse little upper rubber boot, the maritime equvilant.
I’ve gotten more than three complaints about how the comments are displayed now, which means EVERYONE doesn’t like it. So, I’m thinking I’ll change their display to the original method except when there are more than, say, 50 comments for a post; that is, if a post has more than 50 comments, they’ll be displayed like they are now, else they’ll be displayed in the original way.
Or, I could keep the Paging feature (displaying 20 or so on a page with a link to display other comments), but just reverse the order, display them in ascending order (most recent is last.
Most recent comment on the bottom, the “Add a comment” field also at the bottom, and a maximum of maybe 10-15 comments per page. 10-15 should give anyone the gist of the thread, and if 10 isn’t enough for them, all they have to do is click the “Show All” link. There are rarely more than 10 comments anyway.
And turn off the comments to the Greatest Guitarist post, then transfer them to a seperate forum where they won’t squew your stats. You’ve created some kind of mutant with that thing. I wonder if it’s a record for most comments left on a single blog post. Does anyone take track of crap like that?
There’s a very good chance I’ll be living in a hotel for the entire month of September. At this hotel, I’ll have a small fridge and a microwave. No stove, no toaster oven, nothing. Maybe a kettle and a regular toaster, but nothing to do any real serious cooking on. The room will also be cleaned by a maid every day, I’ll have access to a pool and an exercise room (which I hope has a rowing machine), cable tv and pay-for-tv (you know what I’m talking about), and, I assume, a wireless internet connection for my laptop.
I’ve never stayed more than a few nights at any hotel, and I don’t know how excited I am about living in one room for an entire month. But I’ll try to make the most of it. For instance, if I have unlimited access to the pool, I’ll try to swim in it at least once a day, either at the beginning or the end of the day. I’m going to do some research about television shows, and maybe see what all the fuss is about, watch a few shows that I normally wouldn’t bother with (I normally don’t even have a tv, so this should be interesting). And, if I have a wireless internet connection, I’ll document the whole thing in a daily blog: picture, text, a daily podcast, the works.
“What’s it like to live in a hotel for a month?” Do you think that would make for an interesting blog?
hey rebecca a job at the owen sound public library….I dont know your site i deleted the address jody sent me…could be eating fried egg sandwiches every saturday…
Tom, I think you’ve just broken the record of most consecutive comments on Steel White Table. Congrats! Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for your prize to arrive. (And don’t open in front of your kids… or your wife.)
Note to “Phillip”: If another Phillip besides the Phillip who is Jody’s brother (me) wants to post a comment here, please use a different name. For example, you could sign in as “Another Phillip.” That would be fine. Thanks.
phill whats with the name stuff?…uneasy with your identity…your id and ego in conflict?…oh I know you want to have a sex change operation…thats it…go for it brother..er I mean go girl..
Arrived in St. John’s, apparently in a little tiny “pocket” of the city where Aliant doesn’t provide internet service. Stuff hasn’t arrived yet. Don’t plan to pay the movers (Hoyt’s) once they unload our stuff way past the deadline they gave us. Otherwise, things are good. I start a film class tomorrow night. A real film class with real filmmakers (not academics who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk). By the end of it, I’ll have made a complete short film, from writing the script, getting the actors, creating the sets, lighting the shots, shooting the scenes, mixing the sound, editing the final cut — the works. Gonna be good. I have only brief access to the ‘net. Gott ago.
wow first trailer park boys and now this…christ between hockey and bad television cole harbour is going to be known as an ittelctual hot bed…hey phil I didnt know you were doing film stuff….Great…I am actually quite envious…I did eight loads of dishes, two loads of laundtry, made four lunches and supper and this is the highlight of my day…yes I am envious…have fun phil…
I can not beleive how bad your coffee really is…..You may be good in Canada..but here in the States you really do suck. Don’t know what you people were thinking coming into my state and right beside a Dunkin Donuts…..Dunkin Donuts as never been more busier since you opened your doors….
AND…your people that are working there are rude and stupid……
AND…you are giving out these coupons to win free coffee…the website doesn’t even friggin work…..A co-worker gave me this coupon,, otherwise I never would have known about it because I do not go to your coffee shop……I decided to log onto the site( which I couldn’t what a joke) to see if you had a place for comments…Glad you do..Please Please..close your shops in RI to let a real coffee shop open……………………….
jody i think donna believes you are the supreme being head honcho for Tim Hortons….did you do something this weekend that we should know about? I am curious though, does Tim Hortons hire migrant workers from canada to work in their U.S outlets…or would those rude and stupid people be R.I locals…curious…jody please clarify this for me cause if you are the grand pooh bah of timmys we have to talk…
hey phil when you are a big time hollywood guy lets get togther if Corner Gas or Trailer Park boys can work I think we can do a pilot..for the Market..the weekly adventures and adversities of a small town market manager…oh yeah…this has cbc written all over it….
and jody I am sad I may have to put the bike away soon..
It would appear that I am indeed going to be in the Sound in November, as I had originally hoped. Let me know what you want pictures of from the Sudbury market, and I’ll take a bunch.
rebecca I am curious about the structure that houses the Market…I am currently in discussions with the city concerning an enhancement of our market…I am very curious about the exterior wood floor, as I have proposed this and it has met with some skeptacism….thanks….tp
holy smokes you should see the kaos here this morning..the PM is visiting city hall this moring, police, security, cisis, plain clothes, sniffer dogs, full body cavity searches, ohh hang on none of the last item yet…yet….
my kids thought the sniffer dogs were cute….
I thought about putting suspision packages with wires under certain cars in the parking lot just to make it interesting…hey jody …this makes me think of al c …he’d love this,,, g diba
I figured if I write a few more comments than i will be on top of rebecca….I mean I don”t mind being under her…I mean you know on top…I mean…you know what I mean…
are you sure you want to come to owen sound Rebecca…??
CONGRATULATIONS TOM! With 108 comments, you just made it into the top 10 list of most comments posted to Steel White Table! Everybody, give it up for Tom! This is a momentous occasion! Nay — an accomplishment!
1. Phillip (757)
2. Jody Cairns (454)
3. Pender (445)
4. Sharp (290) — one of those guitar people.
5. Ryan (250)
6. J (179) — another guitar person, I assume.
7. Chris O (172)
8. Jody (123) — a kinder, gentler, less complicated Jody Cairns.
9. Rebecca (108)
10 Tommyboy! (108)
Seeing how those ‘greatest guitarist’ comments don’t count, and neither does Jody Cairns’s alter ego Jody, Tom is actually #7. Give it up for #7!
I’m so happy I would like to thank all those responsible, my kids for driving crazy, my wife for scowlling at me, all of whom encourage me to come over into this den at the city hall to spent untold minutes, nay hours wasting my time…my limited time, thank thankyou so much
hey phil what about the derrick dick entries? I mean I am happy with number ten and all but you know one can only dream…
I’m surprised I’m still near the top. I haven’t done much spamming on here in months since it became overly popular amongst guitar people I didn’t feel I needed to post anymore.
Jody, in the Tim Hortons update, you said, “Comments to this post are shut off until internet users become intelligent (i.e forever).” Perhaps you should have specified “until Tim Hortons patrons become intelligent (i.e. forever).” (Ha-ha!)
Just got in from a ride, starting to get chilly, but was a nice clear evening, out for about 3 hours…just normal weekend stuff, Market, supper at friends, hiking, cleaning, blah blah blah…I have a great life..ignore all of this if I was not one of the threee…hey I want to go see wallace and gromit, and history of violence…nice combo..I forget which one I am to take the children to…
Tommyboy (1) - Last weekend, I took a dozen or so pictures of the structure of the market. I’ll try to get more before I come down in November. Rather than posting them on Flickr (because then I have to edit them down), I’ll burn them onto a CD for you.
Tommyboy (2) - Huh. My sis didn’t say anything about the PM being in town. She must have missed it. But did you feel the earthquake the other day? 4.2 on the Richter Scale. Nice!
Tommyboy (3) - When I come to Owen Sound, I’ll have my sister as a bodyguard. She may only be 5′2″ and 90 pounds soaking wet, but she’s pretty fierce :)
Phillip (1) - Woo-hoo! Top Ten! I rock! :)
Phillip (2) - Weekend update: Currently, I’m watching (sort of ) the Vancouver-Colorado game. It’s on, but mostly as background noise. Today, not so much - didn’t make it to the market, did some running around, and packed up my summer clothes and took out the winter stuff (hey, it snowed on Thursday - I think it’s time!). Tomorrow will be spent watching movies, both here and at the theater.
hey boys or byes the the newfie thing…outside the province or atlantic provinces, newfie is not always a kindly misnomer or means of shortening the length of word…I have often encountered it where the term is used(always by people with no experience with the region)e with the baggage of lazy, slovenly and stupid..not in fun or jest…of course living in the province or region one does not use it with those connotations so hence so this experience is not encountered…I have simply been in ontario too long…of course in labrador they hate islanders and were quite happy to welcome a mainlander…
hey jody what is scott m’s email i heard this week that he hired the brother of a good friend of mine here in owen sound….scott has the power to hire and fire people…who well be fed and who will not, who will live and who will die? ohhhhh
hey rebecca you should get in on this …aren’t you from ontario and have lived in the maritimes…(whereas I am vise versa..)mayby I have “read” the locals wrongly..but I suspect that I have been here long enough that they have forgotten where I am from and they no longer filter their commments…of course you could always e-mail pender direct he seems kinda hesitant, almost non-committal in his opinions on this newfie thing…:-)
whew! thanks for taking the pictures and putting them on disk cause I would never be able to download them off the computer here…plus I’m still an idiot with this stuff…
yeah earthquake…like everyone else I thought a vehicle had struck the market..it has happened…then I went and checked my furnace…it was deceptive because of the loud rumbling noise that accompanied the shaking…of course the teenage Canada World Youth we have living with us “shook” it off ..she is from B.C and claims this happens all the time…like sooo common…I thought it was kinda neat..until I witnessed the devestation that awaited me in the market…gasp…two jars of jam from one of the displays had fallen…911 was called, proper authorities dispatched and all was well….
yeah good idea to have a body guard…some undesirables hang around the saturday market…just do not mention books…since children it is an area where $$ rarely goes and I miss it terribly…I have actually stopped going to bookshops, used or otherwise because i just get cranky..well not really but I go in less frequently…
When I lived in Halifax, I kept getting called the “Upper Canadian” as a derogatory name :) However, the nicest compliment anyone paid me was telling me that I didn’t act like a typical Ontarian (they didn’t know I was from here until I said something)
Generally, we called the Newfoundlanders in the class the “Newfs” or the “MUNsters”, as they’d all attended MUN at some point (or maybe that was somewhere else…) I hadn’t heard that “Newfie” was considered a slur, but I guess it depends on who you talk to/where you go.
Hey jody I shaved my head a while back and as the hair is growing back steph noticed the tell tale signs of male pattern baldness…its coming…its the first time she noticed…obviously I will not notice since I seldom see the back of my head..I would have posted it on motocycle firsts since I was taking my helmet off at the time but I was unsure it counted…baldness and bikes….I need a new diversion..
Anyone ever play Settlers of Catan? I played it for the first time last night. It didn’t take long to get the hang of it and really get into it. There were only 3 of us playing, but it was a great time. Better than poker.
hey rebecca thanks for coming by and thanks for the photos! Kinda wierd meeting someone from this forum…well..i mean jody is weird..phil definitly is weird…but ahh you know…
We’re probably going to get the Seafarers expansion next. I checked online. There are tons of variations of the game, even one called Starfarers of Catan where you’re a space colonist. The game can get very cut-throat in a hurry, and I hate the thief, but it’s still one of the best board games I’ve played.
We’re getting Seafarers of Catan, an add-on that apparently makes the game more interesting. There’s all kinds of expansion kits you can get for the game, and endless variations. But you don’t need any of them to have fun. The basic game on its own, Settlers of Catan, is still a really good game. The first time I saw the board, I thought it looked odd, and like many games, when you read the rules, it seems like, how could this be fun, but once you start playing, it doesn’t take long to catch on, and before the end of the first game, you’re hooked. I don’t know anyone who’s played this game who didn’t get hooked.
My problem right now is trying to find a Canadian store, online or otherwise, that sells the game.
Here are some pictures of the Seafarers expansions, along with tons of other expansion kits. These guys are nuts. Still, I’d love to have one of those wooden base boards. It’s too bad the game didn’t just come with a board that holds all the pieces in place.
I’ve been thinking of varations to mix the game up a bit, things like marking one of the soldiers with some kind of symbol that indicates that it’s not actually a soldier but a hurricane or a tornado or something. So that when you get the soldier, and play it, you’re allowed to switch two numbers on the board. So if you’re sitting on a resource that’s only a 3, you can switch it with an 8 or 6, so you’ve got the 8 or 6 now, and the other guy is screwed. It’s like a hurricane swinging in and wrecking havoc on your wheatfield, or killing half your sheep, whatever. The ‘net is full of variations like this. Though the basic game is still pretty damn good. I just hate that damn thief.
I don’t know why I keep playing Settlers of Catan. I’ve played it about 20 times now, and have only won twice — though both times I didn’t just win, I completely wiped out the competition. However, my friend, Mike, wins 75% of the games. And he ALWAYS wins when I play poker with him. I’m getting tired of losing. The Seafarers expansion pack arrives tomorrow. Maybe that’ll turn the tide.
You can buy all the expansions at gamezilla here in moncton, but it’s pretty expensive. for all expansions and the 5-6 player expansion for everything (6 game boxes, basically) it cost us just under 400$ i think….
The Seafarers add-on cost as much as the original game, which seems like a bit of a jip. It arrived yesterday. We’ll probably play it today or tomorrow. Crazy how many expansion packs are available.
keep in mind, the space one isn’t actually an expansion, it’s a different game. i never bought that. cities and knights adds a lot more complexity to the game, seafarers just adds boats… playing all 3 expansions at once can make for a great, long game. i think we played a 6 player game ONCE, and that took like 5 hours….
watch bad santa phil..if you dont like you can kick my ass next summer….it is not a kids movie…welll mayby for some twisted little $%#$#…hows film school and hey i got a newfoundland cook book from one of the vendors..squirrl pie…three squirlls, box of cornflakes….
I put Bad Santa on my Zip list. I’ll get it whenever it’s avaiable. Could be next week or a couple months from now. I could put it on my ASAP list and get it sooner, but I have a bunch of other movies I want first.
1) If you use up all the development cards (we actually ran out of cards in a game last night), do you just reshuffle the used cards and keep playing, or is that the end of the development cards? No more developing?
2) By rolling a 7 or flipping a soldier card, you can play either the thief or the pirate. But can the thief and the pirate be on the board at the same time? (E.g., Could I have the thief on someone’s property, then on the next turn nail them with the pirate so they’re thieved and pirated at the same time?) Or can only one or the other be in play at one time?
3) Can I play the pirate on an ocean hex that isn’t occupied by anyone, but is right in the way of someone’s trade route (so as to cut them off but not steal from them)?
That’s it. I’m not playing Catan for a week. I must have played 30 games so far, and I’ve only won 3 of them. I’m getting tired of watching everyone else collect a mitt full of cards every round and build settlements and cities while I sit there and do nothing. The fun of the game can only take you so far, but if you don’t start winning, or even come close to winning, after awhile it just sucks. As much fun as I’ve had playing the game, I’m coming to realize my wins were due mostly to luck. This is depressing. I’ve reached the point now where I’d rather play Monopoly.
1) If you use up all the development cards (we actually ran out of cards in a game last night), do you just reshuffle the used cards and keep playing, or is that the end of the development cards? No more developing?
You can’t re-use the cards, once they are all bought, that is all the cards that can be used for the game.
They can both be in play at once, yes. the pirate isn’t the greatest usually, but does come in handy depending on the map you play. the thief does tend to get used more, but there’s no problem with having both of them out at once.
3) Can I play the pirate on an ocean hex that isn’t occupied by anyone, but is right in the way of someone’s trade route (so as to cut them off but not steal from them)?
Yes, you can play it anywhere on water, but if there’s no one with a settlement/city next to where you place it, then you get no free card from anyone, like you would with the thief.
some basic strats that might help you win again: :)
when placing your initial 2 settlements you are looking for a few things, and this is the most important part of the game. you want to get a good mix of all the types of resources, ideally you want to at least have access to all 5 types. You also want the best possible numbers on your tiles. getting both a 6 and an 8 is great, but count up the dots on all 3 tiles next to where you would place a settlement. the area with the most dots will win you the most resources during the game. There is an order of importance for all the resources, with grain being the most important/useful, followed by wood, clay, sheep, and rock.
There are also a TON of sites online that have catan strategies, so if you did a bit of reading, you could go and blow away your friends for a few games before they catch on to your strats. :)
Hey jody what do you know or think about electronic pianos…Anja’s piano instructor says she would benifit from a piano or an electronic one with weighted keys…have been looking up Roland and Yamaha…pricey but hey..after I pay the bills I may have something left over..I was thinking of investing/purchasing/throwing my money away at something like this…(the shoveling money is all dedicated to the bike….) of course i am just living vicariously through my kid and my own desire to be a concert pianist….
I have a Yamaha digital piano, bought a few years ago for around $2500. It looks like a piano, sounds like a piano, and feels like a piano, plus it has a zillion features I never use. You can get them for a lot less and a lot more. I think you should be able to get one for $1000 with weighted keys, although it may not look like a real piano; it may have to sit on a table. Dunno. I bargained a bit for my piano, competing against two local retailers, saving about $500 in the end. See if you can get your music teacher to shop with you; she/he will know best.
yeah like i said i am an idiot with money I was looking at a yamaha clp270..they have a 240 as well but the 270 sounds amazing…its only money…actually I know the owner of the store and he will not sell me the 270 for three months…he will look for some used ones first…but if by march he can not find anything and I still want it he will sell it to me for 2900..did i mention it sounds amazing….steph has not approved this soo we will see…but yeah then you have to come up..just so someone can play the thing…
1) Does the 13-segment limit that applies to roads in Settlers also apply to trading (or shipping) routes in Seafarers (or is there a larger limit in Seafarers)?
2) When a 7 is rolled and you have more than 7 resource cards, you lose half of your cards. But if you have an odd number of cards, do you round up or down? (E.g., Does someone who gets caught with 9 cards throw away 4 cards or 5?)
1) Does the 13-segment limit that applies to roads in Settlers also apply to trading (or shipping) routes in Seafarers (or is there a larger limit in Seafarers)?
No, this limit doesn’t apply. it’s increased to # of roads + # of shipping routes.
2) When a 7 is rolled and you have more than 7 resource cards, you lose half of your cards. But if you have an odd number of cards, do you round up or down? (E.g., Does someone who gets caught with 9 cards throw away 4 cards or 5?)
Always round down. If you have exactly 7 cards, you lose nothing. if you have 9, you lose 4.
I saw KING KONG tonight. You arrive an hour late (for this 3-hour movie) and not mess anything vital. Then things kick into gear, it’s fun, the way watching cool special effects is fun. But I wouldn’t call it high drama. Personally, I think Peter Jackson could use an editor. He’s reached Stephen King status now. He can do whatever he likes and no one dares edit him. It’ll sell regardless. What is a 3 hour+ movie, could have been boiled down to 90mins. I’m never really on the edge of my seat watching CGI monsters running around, because as good as they look, they just don’t feel real. The exception being King Kong. He’s got more personality, more subtltey of expression than most actors working in films today. A lot of work was put into making old Kongy believeable, and it works. For the most part, that big frigging gorilla looks real, looks convincing. In fact, it looks and behaves like a real gorilla. If you’ve seen mountain gorilla on National Geographic, you’ve seen King Kong. Except this guy has got the saddest eyes. Well done. 7/10.
Bob Marley, live concert. For the one of you who might be interested, this internet radio station is playing an excellent Bob Marley concert right now. It’s one of the many concert CDs that have been released in recent years. I love Bob Marley, but I don’t listen to him much these days. However, when I do stumble on to his music again, I ALWAYS love it.
GoogleTalk resets my soundcard every time I use it. And when you have your soundcard perfectly calibrated for tons of other audio stuff (e.g., recording streams, audio from DVDs, recording from my mixer), it’s a real headache having to get everything back to normal.
So I uninstalled GoogleTalk and replaced it with the new version of Yahoo Messnager, which seems to do exactly the same stuff, plus video. But of course it resets my soundcard like GoogleTalk. Damn junk.
I suppose no one else has this problem, do they? I’m wondering if there’s an easy fix for this, or maybe some application that allows me to program my soundcard for various things, so I just click “Recording from Mixer Settings,” or “Yahoo Messenger Settings.”
Webcasting (ShoutCast) resets the soundcard too. I hate it.
I want to listen to Whole Wheat Radio on my radio, instead of being stuck in front of my PC. I know there are little dohickys I can plug into my PC or any 3.5mm output plug that will rebroadcast any sound through a local FM band. But I’m looking for something real cheap, not one of those fancy smanchy $300 jobs. I’m looking to spend no more than $30 (Canadian).
Phillip … this is the Kima ‘wireless radio’ that we use. Not sure I’m recommending. Too early. No coffee yet. But take a look. Doesn’t always work because of some other interference I think. Catch you on the chat and mention it later.
Phillip … can’t recommend a wireless PC to radio device because the only experience I have is with the Kima I linked earlier. It works great when it works, but, for example, right now I’m not able to get a signal out from the Wheat Hole to the little cabin which is only about 30 feet away. It appears to be weather related which is bizarre. It works fine all summer. But when it starts getting cold, the signal stops. I suspect there is interference from another radio wave device in the vicinity and that signal overpowers the weak Kima signal when it’s crystal clear outside. I’m not a hardware or radio guy though so I’m just guessing. All I know is that it doesn’t work all the time. And I remember Sol had the same device and said there was a lot of interference from other low-power radio doohickies in the Washington DC area as well. I think he returned his unit or just quit using it. He may have another recommendation.
I did a quick Ebay search and ended up with this. I can’t recommend it, but it’s somewhere around $30 and looks to be the type of thing you want. I searched on “wireless audio PC” but that’s probably not the best search. These devices don’t seem to have a hard-core name so you just have to use combinations of wireless / audio / PC etc. to dig them up.
Hopefully someone who knows what they’re talking about will reply. Good luck. By the way, yeah, we like listening to WWR on the normal radio in the other cabin so we’re not distracted by the chat. It’s a completely difference listening experience for us. Makes us realize how good the music (sometimes) is. There have been a lot of late nights when we’ve been listening and commented, “Wow, it really is a good *radio* station … we’d listen to it even if we had no connection to it.”
Yeah, Jim, I did a quick search and found this one on eBay. It might be the kind of thing I’m looking for, but without actually seeing it, I can’t tell. So I’m just going to head down to my local RadioShack probably this weekend and see what kind of junk they sell. High quality is not a priority seeing how, in reality, I’ll listen to the “radio” most often out in the kitchen using a dinky little clock-radio. If the transmitter doesn’t work, I can easily bring it back for a refund (not the case with Ebay). I also found some other extremely cheap transmitters on ebay designed for iPods and the like, for playing iPod music in car stereos. These are small little things with a range of about 10-30 feet, so who knows, might do the job. I also went to Sol’s blog to see what he uses (or used). I like what he’s got, but it’s priced way beyond what I’m willing to pay (I’m going cheap-o) here. I’ll jury-rig something eventually and wrote a blog entry about it. Thanks.
A USB FM Transmitter from the Source (aka RadioShack), and a Digital FM Transmitter. I’m leaning towards the later, because it’s not limited USB. All it needs is a 3.5mm headphone plug, which means I use it with just about anything, though it is perhaps a bit much on the cheap side. We’ll see.
I wonder if there’s anything comparable to the Internet Movie Database for books? If there was, and had there been an Internet when I began reading books, I probably would have used it to take track of all the books I’ve read. I think it would make for an interesting history. Much more interesting than my movie-viewing habits.
I’m not sure I like this format for the message board because I have to scroll all the way down the page to see the last message. Would it be possible to break the page down and have a certain number of posts on the page, say 20 or so, to prevent all the scrolling?
Phillip - have you seen this article over at Darren Barefoot, about the economics of your local movie theater?
And if you’re looking for something to keep track of what books you’ve read, have you heard of Library Thing? You can add 200 books for free, or get a lifetime, unlimited account for $25.
FireFox has been giving me some problems lately, the main one being this: Whenever I reboot or shut down my PC, I get one of those error messages that says you better not shut down right now because some process is still on the go that could destroy your unsaved data if you stop now.
I don’t like how the Comments appear; they’re not separated clearly from each other. I’ll try to fix that soon.
Update: this is better, I think.
“Last 5 Comments.” Hey, that’s neat.
Shit, the links under Recent Comments don’t work if the comment is in this guestbook. I’ll try to fix that today.
Update (April 3, 2004, 5:32pm): Fixed.
> displaying a symbol beside each entry
Too much work to implement.
Lazy this weekend? No new posts!! I’m going through withdrawl.
I’m a pimp now - I passed my PMP Certification today! Woohoo!
Your company going to double your pay now?
Triple, I hope.
Jody, in the top right-hand corner of the screen, it shows me how many users are online. Any way to show exactly who is online?
I could display who in two ways: 1) by displaying their IP address, which is not meaningful to most, 2) if I enabled visitors to register, so that a cookie would be put on their site which my site could read, to determine who’s online. I could also use cookies to identify users when they enter a comment. I doubt I’ll implement it.
I stole the lead! I now have the most posts on this Blog! Woohoo!
Keep reaching for that rainbow, buddy!
Keith, you’re a jerk and I hate you. But phillip, you’re cool.
Jody, I thought you were going to lay off on the posts? What happened? Been raining in Riverview every day since? What about all that sunshine, man?
I’m at work.
Lets rename “work” with “digging for camels”.
I can’t keep up with all the new posts to this blog! Of the 25 links currently still on this page, I’ve clicked on two of them. I barely have time to skim through your descriptions, let along visit the sites. And what’s up with all these excrement-related sites?
Well quit working and start procrastinating!
Looks like Butch doesn’t know what post he’s supposed to be commenting on.
Empire Theatres bought the famous players 8 theatre, so you can check both at http://www.empiretheatres.com
Cool site, keep up the good work.
BTW, nice layout its easy on the eyes =)
I’m being inundated with compliments today: one from Caitlyn, and one from Chris (above). What the hell’s going on?!
Well, you know, I do push-ups (i.e. thank you).
Man, I’m busy creating one of the most useless web sites. I don’t have time to do useful stuff now!
(I’ll set it to 50 tonight.)
It’s probably been done, though.
Sorry to unleash this anger on you all, but I feel much better now.
re: “I was trying to come up with an idea that takes advantage of that, how such topics spawn useless opinions because the topics are so subjective.”
Perhaps my latest post will suffice.
The comments working? I can’t seem to add a comment to the dog post.
somebody is hacking into my computer and i want to get revenge by doing the same to them is it possible if so tell me becouse he stole up to a $10000 from my bank
I loved it. I might post a review of it later on.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0384488/
The google ads are bit too much in the way. Maybe once category down.
I don’t mind the google ads except that they’re a different colour from the rest of the site now. Previously, didn’t they blend better?
You’ve been getting some weird Google Ads here lately, have you noticed?
Yeah. Kinda funny.
Hey I just got off this site and went to do my weekly check of e-mails and got a note from Al C….wierd… hey since you are magician and can edit and change comments I now am suspect about all these comments I read, perhaps pender is just your alter ego…I mean I know your a funny guy, but you dont have to hide under a pysdenum, shades of fight club… Hey Im curious e-mail me who was scott talking about, who hated him and who was bubbles oh by the way I hang out with a couple here who are ten years older, who are from New Glasqow and she used to babysit bubbles….the world of the maritimes is two small…
cheers tp
Pender will be honored that you think he’s me. Haha.
I only edit comments when I’m asked to, or if they’re inapppropiate or offensive. I always indicate when I’ve edited something.
Send me a picture of you in your Beaver’s uniform; I’ll post it!
I’ll have to contact the old “hawkEye” leader I quickly disposed of my beaver paraphnila.. the epalets the badges, the fondness for facism it was all too much for me..so gave it to another leader, but I will try..coming soon the 260lb beaver…that has been left open for you pender…
ps thanks for editing that name, i will learn…
Hey bubbles, we’re different people. Why the hell would he post on his own site and have discussions with himself? He may be crazy, but he’s not that crazyish. He sits 4 cubicles away from me at work and he’s the boss and I may do every little task that pops into his head, but I still assume we’re two people.
I think you got phillip/keith mixed up with jody/me.
I was an altar boy too — luckily not a Catholic altar boy {shivers at the thought}. So was Jody. He should post a picture of that.
I was an altar girl for a few years. And I also got the Religion award when I graduated from elementary school. And oh, how far I’ve fallen…
The RELIGION award? I got the “Phillip talks too much in class and doesn’t work to his potential” award every single year. I loved being educated.
Rebecca’s fallen SOOOOOOOOOO far. Now she’s a blog writin’, book readin’, belly dancin’, knittin’ MENACE TO SOCIETY!
Mud Radio will be rockin’ out the night!
I know! I was such a goodie-goodie when I was a kid. And now - Pender’s pretty much summed it up :)
i saw the new star wars movie today. it was good, and worth seeing. much better than the last two installments, and easily the most dramatic of all the star wars movies. the sound system was all messed up when i saw it, going from mono to surround sound every few minutes, but i stayed for the whole thing and then complained and got free tickets afterwards.
first off: the CGI looks more realistic here than in the previous two films. it’s still looks like CGI, but less cartoonish. the opening battle scenes we’re impressive. so no major complaints about the overall look and feel of this movie. the CGI sets didn’t look so fake this time around. definite improve in the CGI department.
secondly: good story. for once, we’ve got some real character development. i had no problem understanding how anakin turned to the dark side. i’d don’t blame him.
thirdly: lots of dramatic scenes, beginning with sam jackson’s light saber battle scene (he’s more of a real character in this movie, not at all wooden and emotionless like the last two installments) — and they just crank it up from there. obi-wan’s and anakin’s/darth vader’s big fight scene is so over the top it’s almost aburd, but still fun to watch, and the end of the fight is almost hard to watch. (it’s good.)
fourth: when anakin turns to the dark side, he REALLY turns to the dark side. he does some seriously evil shit. which is great.
minor complaint: obi-wan and anakin come off like mel gibson and danny glover at the beginning of the movie, and there are some funny moments, but it would have been better if they’d toned that down a bit. still, it didn’t last for long, so it’s not a big complaint.
otherwise, it was a good movie. too bad lucas didn’t write such a strong story for the two previous installments. had they been even half as good as this one, the star wars mythos wouldn’t have been so tarnished.
i recommend the movie.
i might wrote a post about this later.
Hey Jody,
Notice you haven’t been to my blog recently. What’s up? I come to yours. Holy Jebus!
Anyways, if you forgot the URI it’s http://rekounas.myserver.org/wordpress
Laters,
Greg
I read your website whenever there’s a change using Bloglines, which I’ve posted about in the past.
Saw the new Batman movie. Not a total waste of time like most of them. Just a straightfoward super hero origins story, with some predictable killing off the obligatory bad guys. Wait for the video.
Jody, are my emails being marked as spam, or have you gotten very busy lately?
You don’t email me much anymore. :<
No, and yes, but at home.
These comments not showing up in the Recent Comments list is pissing me off. I’ll have to fix that.
An “adaption” of Birdy?! Maybe someone made it into a play.
Rebecca I was just scrolling through old messages,,yes I have no life…and you mentioned you knitted…my wife used to knit constantly (pre kids) and has just recently taken it up again…she used ot really enjoy kaffe Facet and a Hargreves designer..if you are familar with these designers, do you know of any other later designers who may have similar challenging patterns…I was thinking of getting steph some pattern books but the ladies at the knitting store..love there acryllics and looked at me like I had a second head…she also liked romni wools and some stuff out of NewBrunswick…I have forgotten the name…big fire but I think they are back in business….sorry to bug you but you can always just ignore this and i will cry…get depressed..commit some heinous crime….
thanks tp
Tommyboy, what kind of farmer’s market do you guys have? Here in Charlottetown, there aren’t many actual farmers at the farmer’s market. It’s mostly people selling crafts and pitas and shit. In the whole place, there might be two vegetable tables. When I go to a farmer’s market, the #1 reason is to buy fresh vegetables: brocolli, tomatoes, cucumber, beets, onions, carrots, everything. The Charlottetown farmer’s market doesn’t seem to have much to do with farmers. I wonder if that’s become the norm.
Jody, if you’re going to keep the comments in descending order, can you place the ‘leave a comment’ part at the top so we can read the last message while we’re responding to it?
hey phil
in regards to market question
Jody and Phillip -
I meant to email you this sooner, but I’ll post it here instead.
http://www.upfrontwindsor.com/story2.htm
It’s the story of a guy who drinks fifty 50’s in fifty hours. And writes about it as he does it.
thanks rebecca, if you ever get a chance to go out east, the fleece artist re catherine is located out of her home (it was) in lawrence town and is well worth visiting.
Rebecca this is wierd…if i am correct you have a sister named Rachelle…who is seeing a young up and coming musician ( actually I hear he is quite talanted)…yeah if this is so ask your sister about the heavy set guy pining about the maritimes she met at the market…i think i met your sister two weeks ago…
yeah jody gave me your blog site…I am quite inept I could not figutre out how to leave a message…I did not know you were a librarian…my wife says you can not come to visit…you realize that both jody and i are irrationally fond of books…hence your being a librarian automatically means we or at least I will inappropriatly transfer this fondness to you..sorry just thought i d warn you before the stalking begins…
seriously if you ever make it to market on a saturday I’ll treat you to one of our famous breakfast sandwiches…and we have an antiquarian book seller at market…we are not suppossed to but its books… must have books…
oh yeah your list of movies on your site your the first person in about 15 years that knew that buckaroo movie…ahhh the old days watching movies at wormwoods on barington and then gottegin street…idle days of youth….ahhh…hang on i still have idle days i m just creaky and middle aged now…
“i” before “e” except after “c” and except these words: weird, codeine, either, Keith, leisure, neither… and a whole whack of others.
Essentially, it applies to “ie” words that have a long “e” sound, such as in “thief”.
yeah yeah…i never stated i was a “good” teacher…
SWT was down for a few hours in the early AM last night because it woke me up: my daughter and I are sleeping downstairs in my office because it’s cooler than upstairs, and around 2am a revving sound from the computer woke me up. It sounded like something trying to rev up for spinning and failing. It was so loud I turned the machine off. I suspect one of the two fans in the computer: the CPU fan, which would fry the CPU if that failed, or the video card fan, which doesn’t concern me as much. I’m going to take it apart tonight and inspect it.
My home internet connection is gone for the summer, which means I’m gone for the summer.
See you later,
Phillip
hey what happened to phil, is he unable to pay his bill, phil let the hydro slide..pay your bill…what do you need groceries for anyway…eat your cat…
Jody - have you considered going to the public library to use their internet? ;)
No, I haven’t, but I think you’re referring to Phillip.
D’oh! I did! Sorry!
What’cha think?
(And don’t open in front of your kids… or your wife.)
i sure hope it is a leg lamp…i forget the name of that christmas movie…frah rah rah rah rah….rah rah rah rah….
a christmas story…you”ll shoot your eye out….
With the way of the world, and life, and all that stuff, I don’t know who I am anymore! It’s very confusing.
Tommyboy,
It would appear that I am indeed going to be in the Sound in November, as I had originally hoped.
I figured if I write a few more comments than i will be on top of rebecca….I mean I don”t mind being under her…I mean you know on top…I mean…you know what I mean…
are you sure you want to come to owen sound Rebecca…??
elvis is in the building…this just spooks me…
CONGRATULATIONS TOM!
So what’s everybody (all 3 of you) doing this weekend?
Just got in from a ride, starting to get chilly, but was a nice clear evening, out for about 3 hours…just normal weekend stuff, Market, supper at friends, hiking, cleaning, blah blah blah…I have a great life..ignore all of this if I was not one of the threee…hey I want to go see wallace and gromit, and history of violence…nice combo..I forget which one I am to take the children to…
Okay, because I always forget to check here…
Tommyboy (1) - Last weekend, I took a dozen or so pictures of the structure of the market.
Tommmyboy - just a reminder that I’ll be stopping by the market on Saturday morning with the pictures from the Sudbury market!
Jody, remember the time I had YOU paying ME rent for your room in the basement in our PARENTS’ house?
Boy, those were good times.
No, I don’t remember that.
hey rebecca thanks for coming by and thanks for the photos! Kinda wierd meeting someone from this forum…well..i mean jody is weird..phil definitly is weird…but ahh you know…
thanks again..
love you jody love you phil….
settlers is a great game, i have both expansions, and the 5-6 player expansions as well.
We’re probably going to get the Seafarers expansion next. I checked online. There are tons of variations of the game, even one called Starfarers of Catan where you’re a space colonist. The game can get very cut-throat in a hurry, and I hate the thief, but it’s still one of the best board games I’ve played.
thief…cut-throat..now I am intrigued phil what is this game?
Fuckin’ google it.
I can look for it while I’m here in Detroit.
I should have clarified: a Canadian store that sells the expansion kit at a half-decent price. Ebay looks like the best place.
Tommyboy - It was great meeting you too! Hope the photos are useful - otherwise, let me know and I can go back and take some more.
And everyone I’ve shown the t-shirt “got” it. And the Gertrude Holstein one, too :)
Spoke to soon. Just won a game. Very, very close game. Best game we played for awhile.
Anyone see the movie “Bad Santa” with Billy Bob Thornton? I’ve good things about it, but I’m still doubtful.
You can buy all the expansions at gamezilla here in moncton, but it’s pretty expensive. for all expansions and the 5-6 player expansion for everything (6 game boxes, basically) it cost us just under 400$ i think….
i’m playing this weekend with a few friends. :)
So did you see Bad Santa, Phillip?
I put Bad Santa on my Zip list. I’ll get it whenever it’s avaiable. Could be next week or a couple months from now. I could put it on my ASAP list and get it sooner, but I have a bunch of other movies I want first.
ChrisO, I have a few questions about Seafarers:
In about 10 minutes from now (at 10:30am Atlantic Time), this site will be temporarily shudown for about 30 minutes; I’m installing a new fan on the PC’s motherboard.
Thanks for the update.
Use hydralisks, it worked for the zerg.
Prompted by Ashley, I fixed the comment fields to remember your values.

Both.
Been listening to WWR today. Jim and Esther are back from vacation.
More CATAN questions:
1) Does the 13-segment limit that applies to roads in Settlers also apply to trading (or shipping) routes in Seafarers (or is there a larger limit in Seafarers)?
2) When a 7 is rolled and you have more than 7 resource cards, you lose half of your cards. But if you have an odd number of cards, do you round up or down? (E.g., Does someone who gets caught with 9 cards throw away 4 cards or 5?)
“Where the good times never end because they seldom begin.”
WTF? When did this change? Man I’m inobservant!! :/
It changed a month or two ago, though I received it from Jenny about a year ago.
BoardGameGeek is pretty extensive and contains a bunch of rule clarifications for just about every board game ever made.
Heads up - today is Tom Waits birthday! If anyone is in the Sudbury area (besides myself), there’s going to be a birthday party at the Townehouse.
(Jody - sorry to hijack the message board for such an obvious purpose! :)
I’m going to change the comment order, with the most recent showing last. I’ll create a link in each post to jump to the last one.
Any suggestions?
Anyone even know what these things are called?
Phillip … this is the Kima ‘wireless radio’ that we use. Not sure I’m recommending. Too early. No coffee yet. But take a look. Doesn’t always work because of some other interference I think. Catch you on the chat and mention it later.
Jody, I had to scroll through 167 comments to read Jim’s last comment.
Silly. Press the End key next time.
That’s too much work.
There are book sites similar to IMDB:
- Internet Book List
- The Internet Speculative Fiction Database
- amazon.com/books
I’m colourblind.
Mud Radio (not really) is webcasting now. Playing both of Jolie Holland’s non-RIAA CDs and then The Be Good Tanyas.

Awesome! Thanks!
I saw “Munich.” It’s long; therefore it’s “epic.” Not a great movie, but not bad. Watchable. Though I doubt I’ll watch it again.
Weather Cam. Yup, Steel White Table now has it’s own live weather cam. You can see what my street looks like from the side of my house. Pretty dismal.
I think somebody just walked by and flashed me while watching it!
I guess I should be recording the stream.
FireFox has been giving me some problems lately, the main one being this: Whenever I reboot or shut down my PC, I get one of those error messages that says you better not shut down right now because some process is still on the go that could destroy your unsaved data if you stop now.
