Wally’s First Casualty
A 20 pound bag of basmati rice that was on a low cupboard in the kitchen. He’s been shitting rice cakes for two days.
Unfortunately, no photos.

This is my daughter’s hamster, Puff Ball:
He’s about six months old now, which surprises me: I figured he (or her) would be dead by now.
A cat, dog, and a hamster. We had a fish once.

Wally (short for Walter) the Newfoundland Dog was born on March 12, 2008, in Fairbanks, Newfoundland (on New World Island) from Seagirt Kennels. He’s 10 weeks old and weighs 20 pounds, expected to exceed 150 pounds in about 18 months.

I’m picking up our Newfoundland puppy from Halifax airport today. He’s being shipped from Gander, courtesy of the excellent Seagirt Kennels in northern Newfoundland.
We haven’t picked out a name yet. Any suggestions? I’ll post a photo of him tonight or tomorrow.
Update (May 28, 2008): We picked “Wally”.

We might be getting a Newfoundland puppy soon; maybe this one, which is actually from Newfoundland.

I’m taking our 14 year old cat (the black and white one) to the veterinarian in about an hour to be euthanized. She never was a friendly cat, but she’s become worse the past year: swiping at our other cat and anyone who gets to close to her; not using the litter box regularly; isolating [...]

I’m a dog person. I grew up with dogs and had one as an adult, and now that I have an established family, I want one: I miss having a dog around.
I’m set on getting a Newfoundland Dog. I never had a Newfoundland Dog but I’ve always wanted one: they’re big, gentle, intelligent [...]

I said I wouldn’t upload consecutive posts this year, but I got sick of waiting for Jody. Not that I have anything to post about now, but let’s try to break the monotony and see what happens. Alright, here goes. I’m going to type for 5 minutes (with a timer) and I’m clicking the [...]

The girl who lives in the apartment next door to us (I’ll call her Beth) has been leaving her cat alone in the apartment for days and days — or at least that’s what I’ve suspected for the past couple months. I just got an email from a friend confirming my suspicions. Beth told my [...]

My stupid cat jumped up into the cupboard tonight, or at least tried, and when he jumped, he knocked over some Mason jars that immediately smashed into a thousand pieces in the kitchen sink. He then bolted into my bedroom and hid under the bed. He knew he was in trouble, but he also had [...]

Puppy mills not always obvious:
This was the place. The place we had been looking for. Our longtime Labrador retriever, Marley, had died a few months earlier and the silence in our home had become deafening.
We both felt good about this place. A small family farm out of yesteryear; the real thing. We liked the idea [...]

Fred’s the cat on the left. She (yes, she) has a large lump on a leg between her foot and knee that’s hard as bone, but it’s where a bone shouldn’t be. I took her to the vet where they said she’d need x-rays ($86) and maybe bloodwork ($148). It cost $49 [...]

My daughter got over the death of Fishy Fish quickly; today we bought a blue betta, because blue’s her favorite colour. Its name is… that’s right, Bluey Blue.

My daughter’s fish died today. (Actually, it died a couple of days ago and has been rotting in its tank ever since; I just haven’t had the oppurtunity to break the news to her.) It was a good fish. Its name was Fishy Fish (like a new doll is “Dolly doll”, dog [...]
