Why I do this

Jim’s (from WWR) directed me to an article by Eyeno about blogging, describing why he started and what motivated him:

Why do I do this? Everyday, or most days, I put something up here and somehow expect the world to beat the door down to read it. I check my hit counters and I’m extremely disappointed to only see a handful of people have bothered to check out my pearls of wisdom. Most of them are repeat visitors and I’m thankful that you (and you know who you are) keep coming back.

After a year of blogging, he concludes:

I’m going to write when I want, what I want and how I want. Links when appropriate, not just for the sake of having links. I want to concentrate more on observations of events that mean something to me. Someone may find what I say interesting – most will not.

I think I’m working backwards from his thinking, writing this solely for myself, knowing a few friends would read it; I’ve been reading J-Walk since he started his site, sending his finds to friends, and I decided to start doing it myself because: 1) I wanted to teach myself some internet technology, 2) I knew some people would read it.

I’ve read that some people think it’s narcissistic to do this type of thing, but I think that’s extreme. I do look at the visitor statistics, thrilled that people I don’t know are reading the site; it’s gratifiying; I don’t think I’d update the site if no one was visiting it.

I don’t know what the hell I’m trying to write here. Doing this is the closest I’ll probably come to being published, knowing I have readers. That’s enough for me.

  1. Closet readers?! (Re-read your last paragraph, TYPOMASTA).

I’d do it cause I want people to enjoy it, but basically just for myself. What would be the point if you don’t enjoy it yourself? If I didn’t want people to enjoy it I’d write down how much I hate myself in a book so nobody else would have to read it.

  2. The only reason why I keep visiting your Blog and commenting is because I don’t want you to be hurt because nobody is paying attention to what you have to say.
