Why Did The Ducks Cross The Road?

Security Escorts Duck Family off Campus, a photo tale of how a family of ducks make their way to a lake:

After monitoring the progress of a mother duck and her eggs, Security became aware the eggs had hatched and the group was looking for a way out of the high cement planter they found themselves in.
Staff put out some water for the ducklings and set up a ramp to assist in their descent from the planter. At about 5:20 pm the mother and (some of) the ducklings used the ramp to exit the planter and made their way towards the waterfront.

  1. Now you know why tuition is so expensive these days. Did you happen to notice how many campus security guards it took to help those ducks get to the water?

  2. Hi – I actually work for Queen’s U Security (and do the website there with the duck photos).

In regards to the above comment, keep in mind that security matters on campus are a bit less during the summer, when most students are away, than now in the summer. The supervisor didn’t have any other pressing duties, so he grabbed a student patrol (2 people) and escorted the ducklings to the waterfront because he knew there’d be a couple of potentially busy roads for them to cross.

If something urgent happened on campus (i.e. a fire or intrusion alarm), he would have left the patrol to assist the duck family and taken care of the matter. If something happened that required the assistance of the patrol, there would still be the other two people to ensure the gaggle made it safely – the photographer, staff from another department (and off duty), and the other person in the photos who is a custodian from a nearby hospital and joined the group mid-way.

So on the surface I can understand your initial observation, and there was one other similar statement among the 100+ complimentary comments I’ve seen or received via email, but rest assured the relatively small amount of time it took to assist the duck family didn’t take away from other university duties… some people may think it’s a waste of time, but I have almost a dozen pages of complimentary emails that say different. And we can’t please all of the people all of the time. :)

For that matter there’s been a statue built and a book written about such an event, so some people must thing it’s a worthwhile endeavour. :) (“Make Way for Ducklings” and )

    Just my 2 cents,

I don’t think it was a waste of time, and I’m sure you guys wouldn’t have neglected more important duties if the need arose (but what could’ve been more important?!). I appreciate the comment to the post though. Thanks.
