A Quiz About Some Confusing Words

The Commonly Confused Words Test:

Good communication is not necessarily about using an expansive vocabulary. It is about properly using the words and punctuation you already know. This results of this test will reflect your level of appropriate word usage.

My result:

Advanced: You scored 100% Beginner, 93% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 61% Expert!
You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels’ questions correct. This is an exceptional score.

I think the quiz isn’t hard.

  1. I think there’s a bug in the test. I know I didn’t get zero in the first two tests, and although I had to stop and think about some of the answers, out of the 40 questions, I took a good guess at maybe 3 of them. Here are my results:

You scored 0% Beginner, 0% Intermediate, 6% Advanced, and 77% Expert!

Your test results are extremely interesting. Though your test scores in the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels weren’t very high, you got at least 75% of the expert level questions correct. Possibly you guessed very well in the expert level section? I don’t know what else to say. You puzzle me immensely.

I’m not surprised. I get this reaction all the time.

An afterthought: Emails and chat rooms do little in encourage literacy. Although I taught writing for 2 and a half years, I think my writing skills have gotten worse because of lazy writing habits (which equates to lazy thinking habits) acquired from chat rooms and writing emails — it never feels like real writing to me. Emoticons, the multitude of internet acronyms, smiley faces, chat rooms — it’s the twilight of the word, folks. People may be writing more, but they’re not writing any better… At least that’s my theory/excuse for the steady decline of my writing skills in recent years. (Working on a Religious Studies masters thesis doesn’t help either.)

  2. I re-did the test with exactly the same answers and got this result — it’s not what I got the first time. Conclusion: there’s a bug in the program.

  4. jode mi ate yrs as a sta homm dad hv dulled mhy litericy skills, alas there are those who doubted any initial existence. Hey I got 93,93,87, and a stunning 55. I guess it is back to the “see spot run books” for me. I still think Dick was trying to make it with Jane in those books, or was it Spot he was really after? By the way I have become addicted to the site and I duly await the IT people here to eventually ask me what my time on this site has to do with City Hall business or Farmers’Markets…cheers
