A Systematic Way To Get Rid Of Religion

A serious, yet hilarious controversial (to some) post by Scott Adams: Could Science Eliminate Religion? (Link no longer works so I removed it – jc).

As readers of my blog know, I believe that given the right conditions, anyone can be made to believe any damned thing. That’s why there are so many different religions.
I wonder if a team of well-funded atheists could devise a legal and ethical method of reducing people’s religious faith.
The first thing I would test is context. If you expose highly religious people to the history of other religions, they will make the connection that prophets come and go all the time. And it would be obvious that (other) people are easily fooled. At first, the believer would think he was lucky that all those others got fooled and he didn’t, because his prophet is real. But this is just the start of the process.

And the pièce de résistance:

Eventually you could create a book that is the sum of the best methods. Then all we need to do is air drop about a billion of them on the Middle East, close all of our embassies, pull out and wait a generation.
The book would immediately be banned by the authorities, but that would make them all the more popular with the young.

It’s worked for others.

Update (Feb 21, 2008): The above link no longer works. Bummer.

THEY ALL HAVE A MENTAL PROBLEM AND THEY ARE ALL TOO WILLING TO PUT IT UP FOR SHOW TO THE REST OF US SANE PEOPLE. I DONT WANT TO BE AROUND THAT JUNK. THEY ARE SOME VERY SICK PEOPLE AND THEY BELONG LOCKED UP AWAY FROM US NORMAL PEOPLE. I AM FROM HOLLAND MICHIGAN. THE LAND OF THE TULIPS.

  2. Haha. That’s on par with:

I LOVE GOD WITH A PASSION .I WAS BORN CHRISTIAN AND RAISED CHRISTIAN AND I WILL STAY CHRISTIAN. AND DAM PROUD OF IT TOO. ONLY IDIOTS DONT BELEVE IN GOD. ITS STUPID AND IT ONLY SHOWS HOW DERANGED THEY ARE. THEY ALL HAVE A MENTAL PROBLEM AND THEY ARE ALL TOO WILLING TO PUT IT UP FOR SHOW TO THE REST OF US SANE PEOPLE. Both are just as scary.

  3. Thank you Jody for pointing out how blind faith can be just as dangerous as religion even if the person is atheist. There have probably been many attempts to remove religion from society (kings rulers etc probably found a need), the most current have been under communist societies. There is however only one way that I have found to remove religion from society, its called education. I was not born into a atheist or religious household, my parents never told me about religion or what an atheist was, I learned about the church as I went to school at the same time I was learning about math and science and starting to question my world. I am now a very firm atheist, I do not believe in god, I find no need to. Also I feel allowing a ‘creator’ to take credit for all of our great accomplishments and most devastating horrors takes away from being human and what we are; individuals in a society. This is my proposal for a systematic way to remove religion:

1)Raise the level of education all over the world and continue to do that for many generations.
2)Get rid of religion in the United States, this is most important because the rest of the developed world can not mock the developing nations and their faith as long as the Americans are a bunch of bible carrying and preaching Christians.
    3)See pt. 1.

    Thanks for reading.

  4. I think I told you this before Jody, my daughter who goes to a catholic public school(cause the class sizes are smaller) has commented at supper that when she is at school she believes in god but not when she is at home with dad…..oh yeah…therapy will be needed.

Oliver, you are going to shame me into presenting in a proper and articulate way on this blog..

  5. Imagine this:

You’re walking through the woods with a companion and you both come upon a house, well stocked with food, fuel, and everything else you need to live comfortably.

Your companion tries to convince you that the house and contents formed themselves, by accident. You start to think they are crazy, because you know there is evidence that an intelligent mind that prepared these things. They could never have come about by accident.

Scientists are amazed that even the smallest living one-celled creatures, have amazingly complex systems, so intricate that if any part doesn’t function properly, it couldn’t function properly (if it survives at all). Far more complex than anything man-made.

So when the atheist comes along and insists that the 200-million plus (estimated) number of living things came about by chance, (and by accident they also formed both male and female versions so as to reproduce replicas of themselves), you have to wonder how sound such reasoning is.

As Hebrews 3:4 says “every house is constructed by someone, but he that constructed all things is God.”

Here are some common reasons people cling to atheism, despite all evidence to the contrary:

    1) They’ve been turned off by hypocrisy in religion.

Understandable. Remember that religionists killed the historical person Christ, for exposing them.

    2) If there is no God, then there is no right and no wrong. One is then free of any moral restraint other than what they themselves decide is “right” or “wrong.” They can live anyway they want, without pang of conscience?

(If that’s so true, why such a high suicide rate among homosexuals? Could it be that their god-given conscience condemns them? “Gay” used to be defined as happiness, right? So why does such a lifestyle make such a large % of them unhappy?)

    3) They don’t know the answer to the question: “Why does God allow suffering/wickedness?”

(The answer is available, and has to do with the issue of universal sovereignty. If God had destroyed the Edenic rebels instantly, there would have been the question of whether rebellion against God’s standards was truly be a better way to go. Thousands of years of human history has proven that it’s not. Once that issue has been settled, he will rid the earth of badness.)

    • Your knowledge of the big bang and evolution seems to be fairly limited. This is understandable since there is nothing about evolution in the only book that Christians read. Your metaphor at the beginning doesn’t really resemble the debate between religionists and scientists about the formation of the world and its life. A man-made structure full of man-made things is an extremely simplified and misleading way of trying to explain the universe. The extremely complex nature of life doesn’t make it evident that there was some creator the way easily identifiable objects do (like the house, food and fuel).

You refer to evolution as accidental, or by chance. Again, you need to do a little more reading about the subject: the continuation and expansion of positive genetic traits is not chance; survival of the fittest is not accidental; it is logical.

You have made a list as to why people “cling” to atheism. First of all, nobody clings to atheism. For some of us, it was very difficult to admit to ourselves that there was/is/will be no god, ever. I know I felt an agonizing heartbreak, realizing all of the tradition and ceremony I grew up believing in was a lie. Much the way you might have felt once you stopped believing in Santa. You do know that Santa isn’t real, right?

Back to your list: hypocrisy in religion doesn’t make us believe that there’s no god. It makes us hate religious people. It is pretty condescending to say that our realization that there is no god is because you have been such a poor Christian. I could just as easily argue that you are religious because of the hypocrisy of atheists.

If there is no god, there is no right and wrong? You couldn’t be farther from the truth. There are laws, codes of justice and other forms of morality which have been created just the same as religious morality: by society. Most people are able to live decent lives and be decent people without the threat of hell or fear of some invisible being watching over their shoulder. This is thanks to our tight bond to each other as humans and as members of society.

You try to use homosexuality to illustrate your point. What a simple-minded cretin you are! There isn’t a high rate of suicide amongst the gay community because god secretly makes them feel guilty. On the contrary, it is because of the persecution by religious nuts like you that make them feel isolated from others. Imagine your family turning their backs on you because of an immutable characteristic. Yes, people are born gay: they don’t just wake up one day and choose a life full of seclusion, nonacceptance and persecution for no reason. Perhaps if you followed the words of Jesus and actually loved your neighbor and didn’t cast stones gays could live lives without fear of being persecuted by everyone around them.

Finally, you claim god allows all the ills of the world because of universal sovereignty. He has to build enough evidence that we can’t live without him. This is such a ridiculous argument, which makes god nothing but an accomplice to all the evil that happens. When you consider all of the horrible things done in his name, there is mounting evidence that man would be better off without belief in god. No suicide bombers, no crusades, no Spanish inquisition, no witch trials, no 9/11. When you build a society around such an irrational thing as religion, there are bound to be fanatics who lash out in extreme ways. It is of serious detriment to mankind that people cling to such primitive belief systems.

I hope you one day will be set free from your captivity by the church. Then you can join us as a human being.

  6. This is for Oliver. Are you open only to evidence that refutes belief in God or could the Right “Education” Steer you toward a belief in God? Religion in a Dogmatic way states their way is the only way. Is your belief system different. If someone else wants to bite it is ok.

    Pete

  7. Ok, say the universe was created by a supreme being… what is the purpose? Just because he/she/it can? And if we are here solely to worship and praise said deity, what does that tell you about him/her/it?

Evidently that he/she/it is an insecure ego-maniac who needs consistant praise from their creations and threatening eternal damnation to us if we don’t comply. What sort of mercy and greatness is that?

None of us asked to be created, and none of us decide to be born into this world. Our predecessors probably had no idea how religion would affect the world in the long run and blindly propagated it amongst the masses.

  8. I was born and raised catholic. I went to catholic school, church every sunday. I was even convinced to work at the church for free with some of my free time.I think its safe to say ive grown up with religion. Then i grew a brain. I stoped beleiving in santa, the easter bunny, tooth fairy, invisable people and all the other things that make you feel better when life acts like life and its not fair. relgion = no brain.

  9. Atheist and proud. It has been proved that unitelligent people believe in a god as they do not have to question anything, just take what you are told by mad monks etc.to keep everyone in line, and to receive money to live in a standard that many in poor countries would envy.
As said by jared he grew up and developed a brain. I could not have put it any better, jared.
I will not live to see it when religion is finally found out to be the rubbish it is but know that sometime, maybe hundreds or thousands of years time, that is if we have not been killed off by fundamentalists and mad people, the world will be free of religous bigots.

  10. Well, I happen to think M Robert makes some very good points, the big bang theory is quite a stretch, as is Darwin’s gobbdy gook.

False religion does cause a terrible amount of grief in this world, which explains our growing number of “atheist and proud” population. The growing number of best selling books discussing why this world would be a better place without religion also attest to the general population’s growing disdain for people of “faith”.

However, God plans on ridding the world of false religion himself, if any of you people would take the time to study the book of Revelation, you would see how God hates the evils committed in the name of religion more than anyone. He will act himself, but according to his timetable not ours.

Atheists lack patience and humility, the mere thought that human beings are the supreme intelligence in this universe is not only laughable but arrogant and obnoxious.

    Have a nice day!!

  11. hey that kinda describes me…lacking in “patience and humility….laughable…arrogant and obnoxious…” of course it also describes many of my collegues in muncipal politics…..I believe there are bugs that demonstrate a supreme inteilligence to myself on occassion and others of my species…..

I am glad to hear that believing in a unseeing all knowing entity who has a sporadic interest in the journey we embark upon through our existance and is looking out for our best interest is not “laughable” and that early scientific endeavors are classified as “gobbdy gook”…oh yeah I have high hopes for our species…high hopes….

jesus jody, I have finally been getting in shit for not participating in the prayer before council meetings….this may be the political sucide pill I have been hoping for…..

  12. Praise be to God! Hallelujah! My Prayers have been answered….Pender is alive!

this probably will not post like all my other comments lately so I can be gushing with praise and adulation for Pender…

  13. Haha, I’ve always read the site from google reader, just can’t post when I’m on the work network, which is where I normally check the site. Lately I’ve been trying to see how long it will be before I have to actually log in and do some work, so I’m able to get to the site just fine AND dandy, simultaneously.

I didn’t miss you, I’ve been here the whole time like an invisible jebus, reading every freakin’ comment!

  14. Atheists and agnostics are right in most of their thinking

It has been common among religious believers to look with misgiving at atheists and agnostics, and to think that they are mistaken; however, in many instances the opposite is the truth; some religious beliefs are not just irrelevant, but baseless. The “God” of main line traditions simply does not exist. I accepted the challenge of finding the One who may be recognized even by agnostics and atheists: the Existence itself. The God of religions may be denied, but nobody can deny that the Existence is. It doesn’t matter how you call it, but “All-That-Is,” is. A book (probably not written for you) “Christianity Reformed From ist Roots” tells all; perhaps its reflections will relieve your friends of the illusion, as they did for me. (Amazon.com).

  15. I always love the “No true Scotsman” comments. Yes, if non-believers just believed what YOU believe and did as YOU say, the world would be well.
