I found $120 at an ATM

ATMAs I was leaving the mall tonight after seeing Men Who Stare at Goats, I stopped at a bank machine to deposit some cheques and take out some cash. I found $120 still in the machine. Whoever was there before me must have withdrawn cash from their account, took their receipt but forgot to take the cash. That’s my best guess.

I flagged down a mall security guard and showed her the cash still in the machine. She took it, put it in an envelope and told me she would take it to “lost and found.” I told her she should write down the time she found the cash and what machine she found it in so the bank could determine who the money belongs to.

She may have kept the money for herself. I don’t know.

(The ATM in the photo is just a random image of an ATM.)

  1. I meant to end the post with this question:

    What would Tommyboy do?

I should also add that was it was Jenny and me and I was following Jenny’s lead (though I’m sure I would have done the same on my own). I do have my doubts about the security guard, though.

  2. Never heard of finders keepers?

I’d hang around the machine for 20 mins with the cash looking for someone running back to the machine frantic. If they don’t notice it in 20 mins then too bad for them!

Or the other option is to go to the bank and ask them to review security footage to figure out who took out $120 in the 2-10 mins before you got there. They should be able to figure out who the person is. I know they review footage all the time, my mother’s bank once commented to her that they had footage of me making a withdrawal from her account using her atm card and pin, and said it was a no-no.

Giving it to someone else is like throwing it in the garbage.

  3. Yeah, there’s no way that security guard didn’t keep the money! Either keep it for yourself, or take it upon yourself to find the original owner. Giving found money to anyone else is just silly!

  4. I agree with Pender. Hang around and see if someone comes back for it… or bring it into the bank the next day. Giving it to the security guard is almost guaranteeing that the rightful owner doesn’t get it back… makes you an accomplice to that end, in fact.

    Or… keep it!

A buddy of mine once withdrew $100. He got 4 20s and a hundred dollar bill. The extract 80 ended up in his pocket.

  5. cheese burger!!! I woulda been eating a ginourmous amout of tasty sodium loaded artery clogging junk food….or gone to get some porn..

nooo what I would have done and actually what I have done (this happened to me about 3 years ago except the sum was considerably more) was as phillip stated note the time and machine and returned the money to the bank….in my case the bank was able to identify the individual and returned the funds….I live in a small town and about a week later a very appreiciative senior visited me at market and told me her whole life story and showered me with praise..and told me her who life story…and then told me her whole life story….oiy!

in hindsight I would just take the cash and run…

I am unsure giving it to the highly paid, honour bound, bushido code of conduct, security guard was the right thing to do….
