“Black Swan” is Bleak

Black Swan isn’t a bad movie, but for some it will fall into the “Why am I watching this?” category. It’s a dark depressing downer from the first frame to the last. Natalie Portman as a mentally disturbed ballerina is likely to win loads of acting awards for her performance. She’s obsessed with being the perfect dancer at the beginning of the movie, and totally insane by the end of it. And I believe it.

The director, Darren Aronofsky, specializes in making movies that are works of art in that they’re not meant to be entertaining. “Black Swan” in not an entertaining movie. It isn’t as hard to watch as the later scenes from Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, or even that scene from Pi where the main character drills a hole in his head, but it’s in the same class. One viewing is likely enough for the average movie goer.
