“Winter’s Bone” Plays Like a Documentary

Winter’s Bone is about a dirt poor country girl trying to find her dead beat dad because he skipped bail after putting the family home up as collateral. Her world is cold, lonely, filthy, hopeless and scary, and so is the movie. The back woods people she has to deal with are creepy and dangerous. The movie feels like a documentary about Deliverance country. It’s stark, powerful stuff. Depressing and hopeless, but compelling because not for a second does it feel like fiction.

  1. Heh, I downloaded this a while back and just noticed it last night while scrolling down to watch Skyline. I recognized the name, and thought, “I think that’s one of the movies Phil recommended…” Both because the name was artsy and because I don’t have the time to be pronouncing PHILIP when i’m talking to myself! Now I wonder where I’ve heard of it before! Maybe i’ll watch this one tonight…

I enjoyed Skyline, but only because I’m sucker for apocalyptic movies like that. Apparently the rest of the world thinks it’s a piece of garbage!
