A Very Long Engagement by Sébastien Japrisot (7/10) — Five French soldiers are sentenced to death during WWI for shooting themselves in the hand. Instead of facing a firing squad, they are ordered to jump over the fence into No Man’s Land and told, “Good luck, fellas,” with the intention that they will eventually get shot or bombed to smithereens by the Germans. It’s brutal. The fiancé of one of the soldiers hears about this and decides to track down her fiancé who she’s convinced is still alive — just like in the movie. The story is written like a whimsical fairy tale, but war is hell and World War One was not pretty. I recommend the novel for anyone who enjoyed the movie, and vice-versa.
