Dr Pepper’s Flavour

dr. pepperI bought a bottle of pop today, which I haven’t done in 20 or more years. I’ll drink a little pop if I’m eating pizza or similar fast food and it’s provided for me, but I never buy it – we never have it in the house; but today, while buying a bag of chips, I not only bought a bottle of pop but it was Dr. Pepper, which I haven’t had since 1980 or something. And it tastes the same.

This is written on the Dr. Pepper label:

Authentic blend of 23 flavours

I didn’t know that, and that raises the obvious question: what flavours? According to their website:

The formula for Dr. Pepper is proprietary information.

The Straight Dope partly addresses this in their Does the soft drink Dr Pepper contain prunes? article:

The Dr Pepper company denies cherry and kola flavorings. They also deny the other rumors that Dr Pepper now or ever contained prunes, black pepper, chili pepper, bell pepper, peppermint, or prune juice.

Tastes like pickled cherries to me.

  1. President’s Choice used to make a Dr. Pepper clone called Dr. Smooth which was better than Dr. Pepper (and it was smoother). As is usually the case with any kind of weird nutritionless product I like, they stopped making it.

  2. I also got a doctor pepper yesterday, I see that this is a year late but a ixquick search brought me to this blog. I was looking to unravel the same mystery; just what are the 23 flavours in Dr.Pepper?

    I can taste

    1 cherry
    2 orange
    3 grape
    4 cola
    5 lemon
    6 sugar
    7 lime
    8 sassafras
    9 ginger
    10 apple

Not in that order, I cant tease out any more flavours then that.
