John Cairns, 1945-2009

Dad died last Saturday, September 5, 2009.

We cremated him. We’re having a memorial service locally, then we’re flying to Newfoundland where another memorial will occur, along with burying his ashes.

  1. That’s our hillbilly photo. That’s my dad in the middle stuffing his pipe, Jody’s wearing the hat and overalls with his arm on my dad’s shoulder, and me sitting next to my dad holding out a $10 bill, enough money for an 11-year-old me to think it was a big deal. Taken in Foxtrap, Newfoundland. The other people are cousins and friends of cousins.

  2. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what the circumstances are when it happens, he is still your Dad…My condolences on your loss.

  3. was wondering if you were going to do something like this…as rekounas stated..great photo…phillip whenever we went to glace bay as kids the relatives would give us money…normally a buck or two….you know those greenie ones and pinkish twos…ten bucks was a friggin kings ransome… this day the smell of coal or clinker reminds me of being a kid…anyway kinda glad to have known your dad in some small way….thinking of him makes me feel 15 or 16 again roaming the subdivisions of cole harbour….smiling….he often seemed to have a smirk on his face…could be cause I was pissing off your mom….I am smiling thinking of him…I can only hope for a similiar reaction by someone in my time….
