Why Staples Instead of Future Shop

I went to Future Shop / Best Buy the other day to get a specific wireless N router, but when I got there the sales person tried to pressure me into buying a router that was more than twice as expensive. She threw all kinds of computer jargon in my face and started dissing the brand name of the router I was planning to buy. She was trying to confuse me and convince me to spend more money on something I didn’t need. Had she not taken this approach, I would have at least purchased the router I came in to get. But I was so turned off by her attitude I said, “Well, that’s very interesting. I’ll have to think about it. Thanks.” Then I went across the street and bought my router at Staples.

The router cost more at Staples, but when I went to pay for it, I said, “This router is $20 less at Future Shop. Can you match their price?” They said yes, and that was it. Done deal.

I hate going to Future Shop.

  1. She was trying to sell you the Dual Band version, I imagine. It IS twice as fast, but the speed is only really useful for streaming HD video over wireless, or faster transfer times for large files you might copy between PCs.

Essentially, the only reason Dual Band wireless N exists is for home theatre people trying to stream HD to their home theatre PC.

  2. I bought D-Link DIR 615 to replace my old Linksys WRT54G because the Linksys couldn’t penetrate the concrete walls of my bomb shelter where my I have my wireless PC set up. I’m not streaming video or anything like that. All I need is a reliable half-decent connection. The D-Link is doing the trick. (And I got it networked properly thanks to my Lord and Saviour, Pender Chirst.) I told the sales girl I didn’t need anything fancy, but she kept going for that commission. She wanted me to buy a Linksys WRT310N-CA. Screw that.

  3. And she was trying to badmouth D-Link?! Linksys has forged a fairly shitty reputation lately, but everyone i know has D-Link routers!

  4. I bought a router a few years ago from Future Shop. Jody was with me. The sales guy was trying to sell me something I didn’t want. I was polite and didn’t try to interrupt him. Jody wasn’t as polite and blurted out something like “come on Greg, you know more then this guy anyhow.” I started laughing. Maybe we made the guy feel like shit.
