You’ll Never See A Female Pope

This CNN article made me laugh: Vatican ‘regrets’ female bishops decision:

The Vatican said Tuesday it regrets the decision by the Church of England’s governing body to allow the ordination of women as bishops.
The General Synod passed a resolution Monday night that allows women to become bishops, acting over the objections of traditionalists who argued that Jesus only wanted men in leadership positions.

If they’re going back to the tired argument of “because it’s written in The Bible,” here are some good ones:

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. (I Corinthians 14:34-35)

Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. (I Timothy 2:11-14)

We’re still living in the Dark Ages.

  1. See, it’s crap like this that made me leave the church in the first place. Sure, let’s set up lavish retirement homes for priests but let the nuns rely on their families when they’re too old to be of use. Let’s decry rights for homosexuals but let’s not talk about how they simply moved priests who abused children to new parishes when people complained. Grrr…

  2. With any religious text – it is prudent to look at the context of in which something is written. There are many people who use the Bible to promote their own agendas. There are churches that try to treat everyone equally, but a church is a collection of individuals, and as such there will always be people that rub you the wrong way, don’t promote the church views, etc. People will always be people. There are Churches that while not perfect, do promote equality.

There is a difference between religion and church, although in Catholicism they seem to be synonymous. There are a lot of faithful Christ followers that want nothing to do with religion. There are churches that adhere too and teach the Lord’s word without taking verses out of context for any reason.

As for the actual cultural and true meaning of the verses Jody has quoted, a little research will show that they are not to be taken literally and out of context. The truth is out there! ;-)

  3. Good! Great! What is the fuss all about. My monotheistic belief system does not allow women to be the supreme leader either. It does not allow men either. Its iconoclastic leanings mean that the sacred gum blob is our leader. I am the vessel through which the gum speaks….I must go and put on my robes…all of you are doomed you gum unbelievers….
